Well here it goes, for the Schneider drivers out there where is the best place to start out at. My family wants Wisconsin because of the four seasons but I am worried about the weather effecting the income. I want something in the middle of the US like Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama or Mississippi. What in your eyes would be the best state to start out at. I would like to start out in a dedicated or intermodal but if I would have to start out OTR I will want to transfer to either of those two. I have been to the website for Schneider jobs and in just about every state they have a job listing but I want to here from the drivers to get the straight poop. I am in Hawaii now and should be leaving June July time frame so I don't have the luxury of going to truck stops and talking to drivers and being in the military I know that recruiters tell you all the good and none of the bad. What are your thoughts on this? Also would you recommend a Trucking School or a community College????
Thanks for your time
Mark

Here's the skinny. The recruiters are trained liars!!! They will tell you what you want to hear to get you in the door. Over all it is not a bad place to work if you like being micro managed. The training program is short. 5 days with an instructor at one of the training centers, 5 days on the road with a training engineer, and then 3 days for a crash course on the computer system with a few hours of driving mixed in. Thursday of the third week you do a skills qualification test and bang your a truck driver. They give you a truck and send you on the way. Pay lots of attention and take notes on how to do things the "Schneider way". As for freight it really does not matter where you are in the country, they will run you to where the freight is. As for dedicated and intermodal...some of the dedicated accounts will take students, intermodal not so much. They are going to pay you 28 cents per mile once you get out on your own, they will tell you you can get a raise in a couple months, what they wont tell you is that raise is based on your performance, no accidents and on time service. Whatever you sign up for you are stuck with for at least 6 months, they will not allow you to transfer until then.
I would say pick where you want to live and then pick what you want to do from there. As for school, go to a community college. You will learn more there than at a truck driving school. The schools are designed to get you a CDL, nothing more.e7shirleym Thanks this. -
