If you are talking about taking the TX-57 to Hamlin then TX-92 to get to US-277, that cuts off some miles and saves time. But I won't go that way if I have liquid totes on the deck. TX-57 has NO shoulder, NARROW guardrails, and a road that wants to toss you from side to side. All that with a 70 mph speed limit on a two laner. It's not recommended for rookies that aren't used to getting within a foot of swapping mirrors with oil field drivers at a closing speed of 140 mph. I'm okay with it if I am deadhead or have a solid load on the deck, but surge from totes increases the pucker factor enough I stay with the Roby to Anson route. Wider and smoother two lanes, with no railroad crossings.

Hmm, he wanted to avoid hills. That pull north out of Phoenix would qualify as a hill.

I'll tell you what, aside from running us 191 through flaming gorge national park in wy-ut. Southeast ohio-wv-pa 2 lane back roads are not fun. I79 i77 & i70 corridor through Ohio. Off the interstate is where you will learn how to go down a hill.

I40 east of texas and hills in the same sentence really? Maybe near 81.

Op if your still on the high side with over 30k in the box your doing just fine for a new guy. Take the way with the most hills while you got some nice weather. Best time to learn is now

45+ mph is about right for those hills. You have NO worries. Just learn to sit back, relax and WATCH YOUR WATER TEMPERATURE GUAGE IN HOT WEATHER when pulling long hills. YOU might be happy lugging up a hill at 1200 rpm's, down where torque is good, but your engine ISN'T. If that temperature climbs above 210°F downshift until you find a gear you can climb steadily at around 1500-1700 rpm's. That's because the engine fan needs higher rpm's to effectively cool the engine.

Now that you are eastbound on I-40, you can simply run to OKC and catch I-44 to St. Louis. Another option is to catch US-54 in Tucumcari, NM Northeast all the way to Wichita, then catch I-35 northeast to Kansas City and I-70. I have gone either way plenty of times.

If you run I-44 do yourself a favor and stop at the Petro in Joplin, MO for a 10 if it's in your schedule, at least a 30. The folks that own the I-80 truck stop in Iowa also own the Joplin Petro. Don't let your jaw hit the floor when you walk through the doors.
