I would go west and come up through Cortez, CO. There's fewer long climbs that way.
Rudedud&Red and x1Heavy Thank this. -
West on 40 to Santa FE NM then work your way up Cortez-Moab towards Grand Junction then your easting until you are there. It's not too difficult. Especially in the face of winter that is coming through as I write this with the next three storms.
jethro712, Lepton1 and Rudedud&Red Thank this. -
Yeah, that's the way I was thinking. Didn't know if 191 or 550 then up to 13 would be better.x1Heavy Thanks this.

Well, since Rand McNally gives multiple choices and not having ever been in that area. I thought I'd test the waters and get some advice. If you'll take a peek at yours you'll notice that unlike Wal-Mart dcs there's not a direct Wal-Mart interstate route. It's kinda tucked up in the middle of nowhere. As for buying one at a truck stop, why would anyone buy one there. Way overpriced. But that does reflect the quality of your advice.Lepton1 Thanks this.

I concur. Don't go any of the "least miles" way at this time of year, especially with winter storm warnings on much of the route. I have run up and down that route through Cortez, even in snowstorms. It's a beautiful run and will keep you at lower elevations.x1Heavy and Rudedud&Red Thank this.

What is the goal on the run? Short miles, fastest time, less problems?
-
The fewer hard pulls the best.

Ok. A few options
All will run in time about the same, within an hour of actual drive time.
First: this will be the be longest, but most fuel efficient
Run north from Lubbock through Amarillo to I-70 in Colorado, west on I-70 to us40 up to vernal.
Very few hard pulls, most of 70 west of Denver is down hill. The weather for the next several days should be good and west side Denver is in decent shape. More places to stop, traffic should be moderate on route.
Second: less miles, but a few more pulls
Head mostly west and north towards Dalhart on us87 Go north on I-25 and Raton then Denver and west I-70. Last part same as above.
Going out Albuquerque and 550 to Farmington is a lot of up and down, small towns and 2 lanes. Nothing wrong with that, just a time draw. Running out to 191, you will have to back track in Utah to get to the point you go north again.
While these are short miles, they are longest time. Limited services and high non-commercial traffic. RVs and farmers and farm equipment.
It may seem not worth it, with technology available. Having a motor carrier atlas is worth the expense. It does have a lot of good information. Amazon will have the lowest price, when not on sale at a truck stop.Last edited: Feb 2, 2019
