Hi Gang
I noticed the nice list of good starter companies listed in this forum under new driver questions/category. But wanted to know if there was a list for the best companies that offer "local work" or short runs where your out no more than 2-3 days at a time. OTR isn't for me. I have another business that requires my attention and time at home. I've been out of trucking now for just over 5 years.
This is a great forum!
Thanks everyone

I'm guessing you live in Florida which isn't the greatest area. You may want to try craigslist or indeed.com, or you could try foodservice or working for a mail carrier which is usually out and back daily runs. Good luck.

You are good! I hauled mail locally for 7 years and loved it. But voluntarily quit to go into real estate full time as an agent for the past 5 years. Now real estate has slowed down a lot in this area so I contacted a few subcontractors to the post office recently. One told me they had a position open. I completed the application, took the driving/road test, and said they would give me work. But a few days latter they told me they didn't have any work for me. I don't have the 5 years of recent driving experience so they couldn't hire me. What a bummer. I'm an excellent driver, 7+ years driving mail, with no points or accidents.
Thanks for the pointers. I've been searching Craigslist but will look more into Indeed and maybe do an application for Pepsi. It sounds like hard work but they are hiring in my area and I can't afford to be too picky.
Thanks again,

Schneider and others have that 7 on, 7 off, work 26wks yr. Think Roehl does offer that, and saw an ad for another carrier that just started doing the same

Many changes since you last drove. Companies now require CDL schooling or CDL refresher schooling if you've not been driving recently. Many companies as little as 30-60 days & you must start as if you have never driven before.

it is almost to the point of if you get out of the truck, and do not maintain at least 6 months current OTR in the last year, your pretty much treated like you never drove a mile. you can thank the insurance companies for that.

As to the exp requirements?
I don't know the specifics myself or why exactly, but for a seasonal employee with winter layoff
3-4mnths that 30-60 day seems absurd, heard of the 6mnth in 1yr ratio, but that applies more to carriers.Out here in the hinterlands its more about within last yr and then overall accumulation of specialized drive time exp.(mostly tanker and or heavy haul)I was off recent 1 1/2mnths and just a verbal explanation was sufficient, and this was for a multi national oil company. Carriers are most likely culprits(ATA)setting these bizarre rules, OTR exp is over hyped anyways, just a way to under pay the rookiesTruckerJoe-FL Thanks this. -
The trucking industry sure has changed a lot! While I was doing real estate full time for the past 5 years I always thought I could pick up some driving hours if I needed. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
