Which states do you think are the best for flatbed loads (price and availability) and which states do you try to stay away from with loads?

I do not do the NE. Just don't like the tolls and the attitude. I won't go to Ca. ' All freight is too cheap OUT of Fla . Even the rates some call good is too cheap. A lot depends on supply and demand. I have an option most dont have. The better half and I carry clearances so we can do classified and explosives. those loads are far and few between. I still shy away from FL unless I secure a return load prior to taking one down there. A good load to an area that has little or nothing coming out is no longer a good load if you have excessive dead head out or you take a cheap load out. It is a learning experience one has to learn and remember. It is a good idea to talk to agents ( brokers) and see if they have any return loads within a certain distance from delivery. Try to keep your list of agents (brokers) to a short one. Get to know them and use them. Build a relationship with them and of above all give good to great service.. Years ago I did a lot of work through an agent . He would offer me a load to , lets say PA. I would take it IF he had a return load. We got along great. We both made money and the customers were happy to find a truck they could depend on.

Definitely. If you had a connie on your flatbed, you could run loads around just Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois everyday and be home in time for supper. Pays very well.

East of I-35, west of I-95, south of I-80 and north of I-10. I don't even go east of the Hudson River any more. It isn't worth it for the money most are willing to pay plus the deadhead out. I will do a Florida load every now and then, when the rate is high enough. Texas is hit and miss on getting a return load out. You could stay in the Midwest and do pretty well if you want to run regional.

That's encouraging, as I hope to be running a flatbed regional eventually.
