If they say it pays $1000 and then when you get your rate confirmation it says $600, I would probably run away. Odds are the rate is not the only thing they are lying about.

Currently, I get 850cad on a 700 mile daily run hauling cans with a carrier, $800 looks attractive to me and I think I should be able to increase it up a bit. But is that a realistic rate and do broker usually cut anything off from what they quote you over the phone?

well, it depends on the backhaul. I mean I can get dam near 2k on an overnight load from TN to PA but loads from PA to TN are hard to find and pay only like 900-1200.

Rate confirmation paperwork is the most important, they can tell you a load pays $3,500 over the phone but if your rate con. Only says $600 then $600 is what they are gonna pay b/c that's what will hold up in court when you go to get your money.

Brokers never cut off their quote. What they quote (ie rate confirmation), they pay. Sometimes you have to remind them but in the end they pay. At least brokers with decent credit scores

Thanks guys for the help. We have a truck paid off, sitting and not making any money. I am not a driver but I am looking to put a driver on. My father is currently out of trucking due to health. Any type of advice is greatly appreciated.

On topic of loadboards, pay for truckstop.com, truckersedge.com and get the free chrwtrucks.com. These 3 are real complimentary and together have a lot of loads. Use truckstop.com to see what similar loads paid in the past. Like if you search loads from one place to another, truckstop.com tells you how much such loads have paid on average in the last 30 days.

They probably require MC # just for registration?

I am currently waiting for CVOR and MC# process to be completed.

Do you guys book back hauls before you leave? And how much time does it take to deliver a load and get the next one, on average. Waiting is something drivers really question about.
And do you get permanent customers by using loadboards if you continue to haul for same customer regularly. I think it would be great for both parties if they a get rid of the broker, split brokers share between shipper/ carrier. But how often such deals are made?

I never was able to cut brokers out. I usually try to book 2-3 loads ahead. Its real important for me to pickup a load same day as delivery. Something really hard to do unless you drive on paper logs:p. chrwtrucks needs MC# i think. But not the other 2 loadboards (although im not sure). I mean i only look for backhaul after I actually book the first load. But I don't wait until i deliver the load to look for the next one. I always assume it will take max 3 hours to deliver. So if I deliver at 7am, I look for any load that picks up after 10am.

If you get a rate con that has a number that is different than what you agreed to on the phone do not sign it. Call the broker back and tell them that the money is not correct and you will not cover the load for anything less than what you had agreed to on the phone. Sometimes its just an honest mistake on their part, once in awhile they do that in hopes that you do not catch it. I'll make them fix it or I will find something else to do.
