I'm looking into getting my CDL A and have looked into multiple options for financing school. I've already looked into the Community College route and a 24 week programs is not an option. I've also looked into multiple company sponsored programs (Swift, Stevens etc) and they seem like a total rip off.
I've heard of certain grants through the Workforce Investment Act but I'm not sure if I qualify.
Just looking to get the license then I'm off to the oil patch in Texas! Any advice is much appreciated!

Check with your local unemployment office for possible assistance with training. Everyone has cut way back on funding, but there's still a possibility of getting some assistance. Won't some CDL schools will help you obtain a student loan?

Any of the training companies require a year contract at a
reduced rate, try to pick one close to home..riding the grey dog sucks.

check with the unemployment office. They will determine if you qualify for the WIA/WOIA grant. Most medium & large trucking companies have Tuition Reimbursement. ALL CDL schools have student loans. If you can't get the grant, take a loan & work for a company with Tuition Reimbursement. Go find out, don't wait for someone to tell you. IMO.

It is likely the Workforce Investment Act. Find out if you quality, one "cost" of the Workforce Investment Act to you, that most people fail to consider, is the waiting time for the bureaucratic process to complete if you do qualify.

I agree company programs are not the best way, maybe not a total rip off but I do get your point, there is a real additional cost to them over self-financing. However, I think those are you choices, WIA or company sponsored. Otherwise your question is "where can I find money falling from the sky?"

I agree with you re: the rip-off aspect...

    You ask how?

    Lemme 'splain it...

You are asked to pay $5K+ either via long term commitment, or high interest loan...$4-5K if you pay "upfront"

    And then this happens...

    • You sit in class reading stuff you could have read yourself in your own living room, and proceed to DMV, do the written test & pass
    • You stand outside, with 20 other students doing backing manouvers all day. NEVER 1-on-1
    • Some students are EXTREMELY DUMB, so they literally slow you down.
    Yes. It's a rip off.

CDL schools are almost like Trump University....only the dumb ones pay FULL FARE....lol
