Best way to get into oversize hauling??

I'd go for it and stay local. You don't need experience for a specific type of equipment to haul it. Just drive it up and chain it down. When in doubt on how many chains you can always look in the little green book. Know your lowboy, that's where the money is.

 

Stay local, like said before, you have the basics in hauling. Common sense with loads. The bigger the equipment, the slower you go. Height, width, local permits and rude drivers are a every day issue.

 

Lol you just described my job op, they are a dime a dozen once you get into construction.

they are out there, you just gotta keep looking, talk to people like you said. Go into their shop and see if they need anyone etc. once you get in you’re good. All the construction guys are cool and network together.

Go to your local diesel pumps and ask the lowbeds with local decals who is the BEST outfit in the area to work for. Few names will bubble to the top. Drive over there with your medical card and CDL ready for wiz quiz, tell them youve got a CDL with dump and flatbed experience and youll start on a push broom today if thats all they got.. Youre a plumber and aint scared of crappy jobs. Theyll hire you and youll move up to a truck one way or the other.

 

I would not even worry about the big construction companies. I always made more money with smaller medium size companies, and that is exactly how I got in to pulling a lowboy. The company probably had less than a hundred pieces of equipment total, and just one lowboy when I started.

You are out of work now, I would not concentrate on the right career job, I would jump on a suitable job heading in the direction you are wanting, I have found it was always easier to get connections while I was working, and always had a place to go when I wanted to make a change.

 

I would talk to places that rent equipment like sunbelt or local Cat,Case or Bobcat dealerships. Also crane companies have drivers that just do counterbalances and structure pieces then work into heavy side in the company. Check out H&S enterprises in Phillipsburg.

 

The sunbelt guys here make good money to drive a roll back. Throw 4 chains and go.

You can make better with oversized but it’s a gravy job if you don’t care about a challenge.

I saw a guy have a hell of a time getting in with a low bed today. He had to run over 3 medians and scraped the whole way into the parking lot as well. He should have just loaded the excavator on the road...
