Hi all, My husband has a CDL B, been a schoolbus driver for several years and is considering switching to the trucking industry. We are from Indiana.
Any advice greatly appreciated on how he should get started.
Thanks!
Best way to set started in trucking?

Check out the exoediter forums here . Indiana is a pretty good area for expediting . Most of the trucks are straight trucks but hazmat endorsement is almost a must .

Thanks, he would like to obtain his CDL A, any idea on where would be the best way to start that process.

If you guys are ready to live on his current salary, and be apart for extended amounts of time. I say go for it.
The pay will be about the same, since the economy is in the crapper. You'll just have more time alone. -
go to the DMV and get the CDL Class A handbook and study the laws and regulations.Controlling a 53' trailer is a lot different than a bus of similar length, especially when backing so I would advise going to a school. They will teach him the basics of driving, backing, logbooks, laws and regulations. They will also provide a truck and trailer for the road test and set up all testing for his CDL.Then he will go to a truck company and start out with a trainer for a number of weeks (usually 3-5wks) then take his road test with the company.Once he passes he'll get his own truck and get to work! C1 driving school has a location in Indianapolis,In so they wouldn't be too far from ya.let us know how it goes! Good luck and be safe!

Take the money your gonna spend getting a class A and go out for a nice weekend together,...And let him stick with the school bus,....You'll both be happier and the money will be better spent,....IMHO......

He's not a city bus driver, he's a school bus driver. It is pretty much part time on top of not great pay. My wife did it for a while years ago and quit to waitress.

And still probably making as much as a new otr driver!!!,.....

Based on some of the post I've seen here over the past couple of weeks. 800 miles a week ? For a team !?!
That's the most accurate statement I've seen, in awhile.walleye Thanks this. -
Yup,...It's getting very, very sad out there,.....I applied for a janitors position that starts at 21.00 an hour,..with benefits, pension and OT...If I get lucky and get it I'll never drive a truck again,..
