I'm not a trucker, but I do a lot of highway miles on the bicycle. I don't know of a way to signal to you guys except to wave, but conditions don't always allow that, especially in the wind from a passing tractor-trailer.

That's why I came to this forum, to say my piece to truckers in general.

I just want to thank y'all for being the best drivers on the road. On a two-lane with no shoulder, I'd rather be passed by any dozen of you than any one Escalade.

Words aren't enough, but they're all I have here. Thank you for handling big tonnage so gracefully and making it look easy. Thank you for treating other road users with respect. Thank you for my life.

Thanks but no thanks are really necessary, do you know how much paper work is involved when a biker or pedestrian is "sucked" in under the trailer?

    Thanks for noticing

NYRoadie: I don't believe it's just paperwork that keeps truckers from squishing people. Hope you will pardon me for arguing about it.

:biggrin_25514: As a bicyclist myself i have to agree, truckers are safer to share the road with than any other traffic.
Worst of all are the moms in their RVs, they are aggressive and inconsiderate, I see that both from my 2 wheels and also when riding along in hubby's 18 wheeler.

Hate to be the hater here but almost everyday i haft to cross the center line or slam on my brakes for a bike rider. I would love to just grab a gear and grease right by them but if somebody got hurt or killed i dont wanna live with that or DOT.... But why should i haft to move over or slow down when im the one dishing out alota $ in road tax.... stay in town were theres sidewalks or gravel roads. Sick of bikers riding the white line. Just takes one person to not be paying attention and chances are your life will be taken along with the drivers because nobody deserves to live with that on there mind... Is it really worth taken the chance? If bike riding is your thing, great. Just pay attention and move over....

Well thank you for being a responsible cyclist, many are not. It's difficult sometimes to make a turn, maintain safe driving when cyclists aren't responsible. While I'd like a hood ornament.......I really don't want someone's bike as one. :biggrin_25525:

I've been an avid rider for a few years now, and I can appreciate the multiple perspectives I can see. What I see is that there are problem people in *every* group. My riding club has a few who, while sporting "share the road" bumper stickers on their cars, are real jerks when they're on the bike, "taking the lane" when it isn't called for (though sometimes it really is), which places them right along with the jerky car and truck drivers.
As for the road/taxes/etc... I'd say get over it on that basis. Taxes are supposed to be weighted toward wear damage done by the vehicle, and bicycles are basically invisible to the road wear gremlins. Also, the shoulder, when there is one, is frequently littered with broken glass and sharp gravel. Hmm... wonder where that glass came from...

Yeah, it's a pain to lose speed on a steep hill (in either a truck *or* a bicycle), but I've been in both positions, so I don't really get upset, so long as the other rider/driver isn't doing anything to exacerbate the situation. I think most anger is based in ignorance, though there are times when anger is justified. Then how you act becomes a mighty good indicator of your character.

Heck, I'm jabbering now. Just got in from a long day out in the sun. Sorry. :)
