that was as a company driver.
i'm don't haul the crap anymore. it don't pay. -

why my last 2 companies hauled that crap like crazy is beyond me. -
Likely because THEY made $ having people like you haul it.

To the guy who asked how to tell if you're heavy without a scale around:
Air gauges on your air suspension. Likely less than a $200 investment if you get nice liquid filled ones. I've loaded in a field to within 100# of gross and been legal on all axles. -
My new 2013 reefer can let me scale right at 46k legal with full fuel. But, I'm right at 80k. My old trailer let me scale up to about 44k full of fuel.
Produce tends to always be 'max weight', which is aggravating. Also when potatoes, onions, etc are paid by the bag, etc. If they say $1900 on 42k and they want to load 44k, then the price has to move up. Had one load where the bags were heavier than stated (51 pound bags instead of 50), that extra 800 pounds put me right at 80k with half tank of diesel. I was already loaded and had already agreed to the number of bags and was told they were 50 pound bags (called the shipper and was told they're 51lb, go figure). I wasn't happy.
Now, a load that I just ran recently really boiled me. Customer wanted to load 46,120 on 22 skids. Another reefer had already come back overloaded with a scale ticket showing 500lb over and he can scale up to 45.5k. I told them you can't load 22 skids. They told me to I'd have to leave, as they won't load just 21. So, I'm dealing with the broker and angry. They don't understand what the shipper is talking about. I told them I would not just load 22, go scale, and then comeback when overweight. Mostly because I was light on fuel as I had nowhere nearby that had good price for diesel and I wasn't about to put 150 gallons in at a no-name place that would charge me more than I'd get for going back to take off the extra pallet.
Finally, the broker agreed to put $250 extra on the load and I'd just run the load lighter on diesel. 3/4 tank put me right about max weight. And I felt the $250 was worth while and I didn't have to return to the customer to pull off the skid. The thing that had the broker was they had it booked at 43k, which would've been right around 21 skids including pallets. Which is what they expected me to haul.scottied67, RedForeman and areelius Thank this. -

Ok maybe this is easier for you to UNDERSTAND.
They hauled that " CRAP like CRAZY" because they MADE $ hauling it as they only had to paid you $0.35 / mile -
If you could have renegotiated a higher rate due to the increase in weight would it have been possible to do it without filling both tanks?
dannythetrucker Thanks this.
