Hey drivers!
On January 10/2013, I hit a wall that I knew had to be overcome. I concluded that being 46, 325 pounds and really out of shape was not going to cut it any longer. It was after I ate the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs breakfast (yes, biscuits and gravy too) at the Iron Skillet and it sat in my gut for what seemed like all day that I decided that I could do so much better by staying out of restaurants.
I decided on following the Atkins Diet because I knew it was very effective for me, having tried it with great success but out of pure curiosity 10 years ago, and because it really is very simple to follow especially while driving over the road.
So here I am, 2 months in and 36 pounds lighter. Cholesterol is showing a slight improvement, blood pressure is good, fatty liver is way down and at a safe level.
I'm walking more than I ever have and I don't get out of breath untarping anymore. Going #2 is regular and healthy.
I've eaten 3 restaurant meals while on the road since I started. Every other meal has come out of my cooler or from my butane stove.
Anybody else doing Atkins or low carb?

Congrats! I am not a driver but have also had success with the diet. They have some incredible bars too!

Good luck and once you get to your weight goal don't mess up like some do and gain it all back. Stay healthy I know I need to do something but I keep putting it off maybe I will get on it soon.

Yes, keeping it off is the key. It seems that most people that try Atkins, do the induction part and never move on to the rest of the plan which includes more food choices but comes with slower weight loss. Then boredom sets in and the weight goes back up.
It seems that most is the criticism of this diet also focuses on the induction part and not the whole diet.
Yes some of the bars are tasty, but I try to limit those to emergency situations. -
My husband and I have tried several 'diets'. Atkins seemed to be the most successful for us, but just as Freightlinerbob says, we got to the 'bored with the food point'... ate/cheated with our 'trigger foods' and off that wagon we came and landed in all the pounds we lost and then some! When we both got diagnosed with diabetes it was our 'wake up call' and instead of a 'diet' we changed our way of eating... And we had help via Gastric Bypass Surgery. If we hadn't of done that, we wouldn't be where we are now. There was NO WAY we could have passed our DOT physicals. Not only was my husband and I starting the diabetic tight rope, but he was on heart medication, asthma meds and looking at hip and or knee replacements!! Now he is off ALL meds... We both are no longer diabetics and we have completely changed our food choices. THAT IS THE KEY!! We needed the tool (GBS) to help us, and to 'teach' us and to 'remind' us to eat properly. That is all GBS is, is a tool... The changing of food choices and portions is what works!! PS... My husbands pants are the same in both pictures!!
Lil'Devil and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -
Way to go Freightlinerbob!! I tried the Atkins about 10 years ago with great success but have since slipped back a little. Reading your post has given me a kick in the ### to get back on the horse and lose weight again. I'm pushing 300 with BP in the 140-150/90 range so the clock is ticking.

A lot of the eating habit is just having the food available on the truck where you have it when you need to eat and then planning what to eat for the day. We lost weight with even eating Subway sandwiches with all the veggies added and other places like Arby's. You will feel so much better and with so many places requiring these sleep apnea tests when you are larger, it will be to your benefit to lose as much as possible.

Planning ahead by shopping for healthy foods has become a habit to me now. The unforeseen benefits are increased efficiency, only needing a truckstop for fuel and showers, and significant savings in eating expenses.
I can eat a healthy meal or snack when I'm hungry instead of hitting the vending machine while I'm waiting at a shipper.
The reality of doing this while living in a truck is that preparing meals and storing the food prior to preparing, has to be kept as simple as possible. This lends itself to the early stages of Atkins very well. But meals often come down to protein and raw, brightly colored veggies. Good thing I enjoy that. I imagine a Paleo diet would work as well. -
The Atkins diet will kill you. Your body is not made to live that way. You're literally starving it for nutrition, and killing your kidneys with excess wastes.
To lose weight, eat less calories than you burn, and exercise strongly at least 3 days a week, for at least 45 min.
To be healthy, eat LOTS of a variety of fruits, vegetables and nuts, minimal refined carbs (flour, white rice, sugar, etc), meaning limit your bread, no pasta, etc, etc. Limit meat to only fowl and fish, and no more than 3 times a week. -
Power Wagon: you clearly have no understanding if what the Atkins diet is. Your comments prove it.
I just had my evil kidney destroying lunch:
2 cups lettuce
1 can tuna
1 celery stick
1/2 cup walnuts
1 tomato.
Table spoon Mayo
Washed it down with some of the gallon or more of water I drink daily.Buckeye Don, camerabrat, peterd and 2 others Thank this.
