I am in CDL school right now. I have been looking around a lot at different companies, gotten advice from drivers etc. From what I have gathered there is a benefit to both a large carrier and a small carrier. On one hand a large carrier follows policies on how they deal with people. But you are more of a number and less an individual. With a small carrier they have less of a policy on how things are done and you can get screwed, but you are less a number and more an individual. I am sure there are variations and exceptions to this, but this is what I have gathered. Comments?
Big Carriers vs Small Carriers

How far from Myrtle, MS are you? if your within 120 miles or so, give Roxy a call in Recruiting for Watkins Shepard Trucking......Great company! midsize to small company 700ish trucks been around 30+ years, tons of miles and they know all of us by name, when I walk up to my dispatcher to get a load, he knows who i am.....Plus they dont send you out for months with a trainer, after orientation you go out solo.
Theres a TON of info on them in the DAC section including my Blog/Thread

# AmericanTrucker4Life : I recently did the on-line app but never got a reply. Should I assume they aren't hiring or give a follow-up call? 95% of other companies seem to reply ASAP so I got out of the habit of calling in after submitting a resume or application. (I'm from Chattanooga and hoping being close to Dalton, GA is a plus)

I would deffinatly call, usually they'll call you back within 24 hours, but sometimes you'll slip through the cracks, I think we only have 2 recruiters and they get 1000 calls and email a day.
You deffinatly wont be dissapointed with W/S

Yep even if your a Rookie. You go threw a 10 day orientation and then they throw ya the keys to a truck, and point to a trailer and say "have at it!"
There isnt anything you cant learn on your own that you need a trainer for. If your driving needs work, you dont have common sence, and or cant stop and think before doing something stupid you might need a trainer. If that DOESNT describe you, W/S could be a good fit for you.

My recommendation to any driver, new or experienced, is to look for the "mid-size" carriers that will hire you. (100-250 trucks) and avoid the mega-carriers and the small, unproven carriers
