That oldie is called a cable excavator, very common - and numerous - in the 50's.

 

A lot of the old timers didn’t have any money to buy what they wanted so they ended up building what they wanted.

 

That's true. Sometimes, especially in the winter and things were slow we'd be raiding our scrap pile and any other scrap piles we could find.
A lot of times it was the end result of somebody saying to himself "I wish we had a------ that would--------and if we put an -------on it it we could --------too. He'd mention it to somebody and if the idea sounded good they'd start spit balling it. None of our guys have a degree in engineering, just a lot of time running and building machinery.
Sometimes you could really come up with something great.
And sometimes you'd wind up with the most expensive paper-weight in the Coast Range.

 

I have never seen another cable excavator that had a hydraulic boom. That is why I found it so odd.

 

And it appears to have a telescoping boom, or at least the sections look like crane boom sections.

I know I have never seen one like it before.
