With my 955 that's in for upgrades, the 198 seems best but then again it was matched to the 198..I tried it on another 955 I have and the 198 was on par with the sl41..When my radio comes back from upgrades I have a new 198 ready to go..

It is my understanding that increasing the modulation level also increases the PEP wattage which would result in greater transmission distance. If a Cobra 29 is set at 50% modulation it would PEP to 8 watts, at 75% PEP would be 12 watts, and at 100% it would PEP to 16 watts, so the radio with the higher modulation setting would transmit further.

How has it changed? Is it tinny or lacking in adequate modulation? Every time I hear one it sounds good to me especially on a Cobra 29. The 636 used to be my mic of choice but last couple of years prefer the 198 and most recently the SL 41.

I prefer a 636 even over my old school road king sounds great in a hopped up 29.

Just from my ear of a cpl recording i did,the diff in the 198 and sl41 were about the same but they were done on radios matched with my radios...Gotta try them again on an ole cobra i have....
As for the change in 636 sound i honestly dont remember, been a long time sence i used one......BUT if my memory is right, they got a bit to muffled for my likeing..

Just cause you add pwr doesnt mean it reaches further if signal is dirty at all or off freq...When wolfmans had my old 955 they made it just that way..Sounded loud in the lot but had no range....Till mark got at it..
