As you head east from Erie on Interstate 90, you can't miss it on the left at Exit 35, Depot Road, in Harborcreek. A bold red-white-and-blue "TA" sits atop the sprawling TA Truck Center.

Around the clock, a procession of cars and trucks -- mostly trucks -- drives in and out of the big parking lot.

If Walt Whitman were to catch this scene, he might be inspired to write a sequel to his 1856 poem "Song of the Open Road."

The center is open for fuel, truck servicing, and food 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Buckhorn Restaurant can seat 175 in booths, tables, and counters. Fast-food options are also available at the center, but not in the restaurant. According to manager Bob Serafini, every seat is often filled on Sunday mornings when "people drop by for breakfast after church."

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner carving buffets are available. Serafini says truckers habitually stoke up on the big breakfast buffet before setting out on long driving stints. The carving buffet features ham or beef from a slow-roasted 30-pound top round. The most popular entrees are the sirloin and T-bone steak dinners.

Because I wasn't facing 10 hours on the road, my recent breakfast was a simple and satisfying plate holding two over-easy eggs, hash browns, and Texas toast -- a larger and thicker white bread good for dipping into yolks.

But I wish I'd ordered the Southern breakfast wrap that Al Metrik had ordered. It was a far more original creation, consisting of two scrambled eggs wrapped in a flour tortilla with bacon, hash browns, and pepper jack cheese sauce. He raved about it.
