15 mph was too #### fast no matter where your instructor was sitting.

I worry about those often with the 14' dry vans I pull.
I missed the entrance to a truck stop in Troutdale,OR (Portland I-84 East) a while back, wanted to turn around by making a left onto Marine Dr. and noticed just in time the underpass was 13'9".:biggrin_2555:
Then I was in Los Angeles a week or so ago returning from a Lowes store in Ventura running toward LA on the 101 freeway South and see an overpass marked 14'...yikes!
Scared the crap outta me,I got pulled over to the safety lane before going under it and then noticed the 14' part was marked by a second sign with an arrow behind the first sign pointing to the low spot which was actually next to the support pillar in the safety lane.
Well now I know I can clear it but I have to pull right into the lane of traffic to do it with cars and trucks bearing down on me at 70mph.

I had a good instructor in school who told me " that's what brakes are for".
If you can't hold it down in the gear you're in because you selected too high a gear use your brakes to slow you enough to get the right gear, stop completely if you have to.
Just don't ride the brakes down the hill till they fade out and fail, you got real trouble then.
Better to start in too low a gear and go slow,it's easier to upshift but after a while those downhill downshifts aren't so hard if you have to do it.
If you get stuck out of gear just use the brakes and stop if you have to before you start going too fast.
I haven't been driving long but running here in the West I go over big mountains all the time,Cabbage Hill,Grapevine, the Siskiyous,Snoqualmie etc and after a few times you pretty much know what gear for the grade without giving it much thought.

Even for about a 75 degree right? But again, this is why I'm here. New to the game and taking in all I can. Thanks for the input.

Cats are fair game (no pun intended). Dogs are reckoned to be working animals, and a strike should be reported. Same applies to horses, sheep and cows. You can't be wrong for unnecessary reporting. You can sure be wrong for not making a report when you should have done. Err on the side of caution.

Wild animal strikes only need to be reported to your company, UNLESS you are in the Yukon, in which case you have to report any large animal strike to the local fish-cops. Get their number from the scale in Watson Lake and keep it where you can find it.
