Bill would outlaw testing for trucker's license in Spanish

If truckers want to drive legally on Ohio roads, they'll need a tight grip on the wheel and perhaps a firm grasp of the English language.
Rep. William G. Batchelder, R-Medina, has introduced a bill in the House requiring that commercial driver's license tests be given in English only.
"This is not an English-only bill, but a safety bill," Batchelder said. "When you have truck drivers that do not speak or understand English, safety concerns increase as it is difficult for them to read and understand road signs in English."
In September, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles began offering the written test in both English and Spanish at its electronic kiosks, after a legal review determined that the state is more in compliance with the federal Civil Rights Act if it gives applicants additional options. If the tester speaks a different language, he or she also can use an interpreter.
However, the skills-based driving portion of the test is given only in English.
"There is an expectation that you have at least minimal English skills to get through that," said Tom Hunter, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. Essentially, drivers must be able to read road signs and speak some basic sentences.
Hunter offered no comment on the bill, but said, "The current system is working, and working well."
