If you are chaining down something heavy like a 20k backhoe or other machinery do the chains need to go to a d ring or are the spools located every couple of feet in the rub rail adequate? My trailer has six factory installed heavy duty d rings but they are not always in the ideal spot for the equipment I haul.

You can secure to anything that has a WLL rating. That being said, you may have to add more chains if not going to the d-rings.

What are these spools that you speak of? The square tubing in between the rub rail and deck(chain pocket)?

In between the chain pockets between the rub rail and deck there should be round pieces. Those round pieces are spools.

Yes you can chain to the stake pockets, spools, even the rub rail if it has a WLL rating. The ratings of your trailer should be on a tag somewhere on the frame.
I usually hook my chains in the stake pockets. They just look like they can take more weight.

They're not "required" to have a rating but it makes me feel better.
