I honestly think they're intended to be nose-dived because when you back out of them you can use driver-side window and mirror. When you're ready to leave you make sure no one is coming, turn on hazards, back out and you should be able to see enough to leave safely.
Let me ask you a question: have you ever been to different cities across the nation and notice certain communities all back up their cars no matter where they park? and conversely you also have communities that always park front first and backup when they leave?
I think trucking used to be similar to that back in the day, but nowadays insurance companies have stepped in and forced the "back in only" option on most companies.
I believe that a lot of these truck stops were designed by old school truckers who parked both ways depending on their upbringing and the way their communities did things.
I think people have become scared to nose-dive because of angry, impatient honkers in the morning whereas in the past angry honkers would usually get yanked out of their trucks and get their ##### kicked for waking the wrong fellas up.
Did I blind-side back today? Yes, but I felt comfortable and safe in doing so. There's been times in the past where I've been severely fatigued or bad weather or running clock close to DOT violation or bad lighting... etc to where I've nose-dived and got out safely in the morning by using GOAL and hazards.
I've never been in a wreck nor hit anything ever, when I chat with other drivers the number one hit I hear is during blind-side backing.
Ahem! I've also been known to pull out, turn around and nose-dive if I'm stuck between two loud annoying refers![]()

I simply ask someone for a guide, and I always jump out to offer help to anyone i see doing a blind side. guess I could just video their backing, but I prefer to help..
TripleSix Thanks this. -
Most of these places have adopted the Love's/Pilot model: small, cramped, difficult spots to back into. They want you to fuel/DEF up, grab some overpriced stuff from the store, and leave. The only time they actually WANT you to stay is if you've paid for a spot or there's services involved where they get a kickback from like IdleAir, TirePass, or the on-site shop.
