The previous mech at our shop went around and crimped or cut and plugged all the wastegates on our turbos. I know the primary purpose of these is to allow engine rpm to rise some before kicking in the turbo so you do not have as much lag. Do these have any other purposes. Will doing this cause any problems down the road?? We have a couple 3406c, quite a few 6nz's, and a MXS. They have all been done this way. Is this a good or bad idea. He has also gone in and turned the fuel as high as he could on the ones he could get into with CAT ET...without a tune...The only one he couldn't mess with was the MXS...he didn't have a password.
Blocking off Waste Gate???

waste gate is a thing to prevent boost lines damage, engine overboost. Engine with higher then rated boost pressure runs at lean mixture, with higher internal temperature and more NOx emissions. Melt pistons, toasted valves....
VisionLogistics Thanks this. -
Not a good idea in my opinion. It will certainly make more boost, but you risk over speeding the turbo, leading to premature failure.

Okay, figured that. They have been disabled on our trucks. I know what he was trying to do...just not a safe way to do it. We have been redoing alot lately. Seems like we have some more to redo.

Mercedes engines store codes in case of overboost

Wouldn't you adjust the waste gate to correspond with the amount of fuel you add when you add fuel?? Seems to me he just pumped the fuel and let the turbo be free to do whatever. How would I go about trying to get them back functional and set correct with whatever he has done to the fuel?

I definitely wouldn't do it to the MXS.

Jfaulk...you wouldn't hook it back up?? Or take it off. My question isn't to take it off...I like things to work and do as they should. The previous mech did this. I'm just wanting to get it back right. And hopefully increase the longevity of the equipment.
Pablo...can it not be done through CAT ET?? Is there a default or flash I could get to get it back to stock settings then plug the wastegate back up? These things are driving me nuts. We keep finding things that were done without longivity or dependability in mind. I know if he cranked up the fuel...then unpluged the waste gate to try to get more air to try to level out the A/F ratio...if I plug it back up...I'll get a rich condition right?
Anyone else ever have to go back and redo what was done and you didn't have anything to do with it? lol. -
