Recorded phone calls of supervisor telling inspector to not report defects so their bonuses wouldn’t be affected

The jury should’ve raked BNSF over the coals for that one. Wrongful termination, retaliation (which falls under federal whistleblower protection statutes).

The jury did do that. That's why the inspector who was wrongfully terminated was awarded such a hefty sum.

But it's the same story everywhere: profits over people. Money above safety.

$9 million whittled down to $2 million, only to be stalled because BNSF is appealing!;)

The reduction of $7 million is probably because BNSF is federally funded. And it's DEFINITELY NOT a thank you to our do-it-right inspector.

Gotta wonder if the inspector's supervisor is acting on his own or is being directed by his higher ups.

The regulations are so companies can pretend to care about safety and the government can pretend to enforce it. Once in awhile, they'll have a "blitz", write a few citations, impose some fines, then go back to business as usual.
