My CDL school said it was necessary to write down my shipper and BOL# or commodity on my daily logs.
My trucking company, during orientation, never mentioned this. Nor is there an area on their logs to write this information.
Is it required to record this info on our logs or no?

if there is a BOX on the log it must be filled out . you could put the note in the PTI part bill # and what it is ur halling. I have never seen a log with out the BOXES for BOL or commodity
-
I don't list the commodity. I don't even right down the BOL number. I just write down the companies trip number

FMCSA regulation 395.8
http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/fmcsr/fmcsrruletext.aspx?reg=395.8
Part d8 states RODS must include shipping number, manifest( BOL ), or shipper and commodity. If you use a compny pro or trip number ensure that number is written some where on the bills or audits will get very expensive. -
(d)(11) Shipping document number(s), or name of shipper and commodity
you can write down any of the above....
sometimes you may get a sealed load, and a sealed envelope for security reasons...there will always be a manifest number or a shipper name for you though to write down...as for commodity, they may not list this as it's for security reasons, the less you know about the commodity the better...
somewhere in the remarks section, if there aren't any lines specific to enter this information, you write it down.
failure to put some information, might/might not be a CSA violation this from the revised CSA rules...{395.8}
Log violation (general/form and
manner)
Other
Log/Form &
Manner 2 Y
and this from the "older rules"...
395.8(d)(11)
Failure to include shipping document
numbers in duty status records
Other
Log/Form &
Manner 2 Y
so as you can see, you very well might get dinged for CSA points, if the scale-house or a DOT cop on the road wants to push this....and of course, given the guberments penchant for constantly revising something, who knows what they will say in a few months...???
as far as your company not telling you this in orientation, they must have either assumed you already knew this, or your trainer will have told you....
but yes, even we at my school tell the students you must enter something, like i pasted above.Hillybilly Thanks this. -
Ok, thanks. I'd forgotten about this until someone mentioned getting dinged for not having a BOL# on their log.
We've only been required to put our trip# on our logs..
I'll start putting the BOL# somewhere as of now.
Thanks for the info! -
YOU should keep track of your trip numbers as well. jot them down in a booklet, trip number, shipper/receiver, date, commodity, miles driven....this way if something goes wrong with payroll, you can call them to verify....
the manifest or BOL is what the shipment is.....usually from the shippers end, that they keep track of....but i might be incorrect about this. (a rare occasion) -
One of our drivers received a ticket for not having the information on the log.
He had the trip number, but the DOT officer wrote him up for not listing the BOL and commodity.
I read a long time ago that the CSA 2010 was going to be stricter on the logs and I have been writing all of this on the logs since. I have had 2 inspections since and no problems.hup Thanks this. -
Like I said if your gonna use company pro or trip you have to write that number on the BOL so it corresponds to a specific supporting document. I use our pro# because it is easier to track my loads and pay with them.
