I am currently in a eight week driving school at the local community college. I am one of two students and it definitely is not what I expected. We spend large chunks of time BSing in class or outside. I was thinking the instructor may be dragging things out so we do not take the final test so soon. I am bored. I might be a bit unappreciative of the option I chose because I could be under contract at a carriers school or spent six grand for not much of anything. Maybe I am missing something.

Same thing where I'm at. Six students, one instructor, about twelve weeks of class time. Everything takes longer than it needs to, and there's too much wasted time. But the price is right, I go home at the end of the day, and I don't have to make an immediate decision on a job or company to work for.

Practice your backing.
Practice your pretrip.
See if you can hit every orange cone on the practice range.
See if you can hit every orange cone on the practice range while in reverse.
Pretend every orange cone you hit is a loved one and get out and start crying loudly every time you run a cone over.
Pretend every orange cone was intentionally placed so you had no choice but to hit it and when you do, get mad, yell at it and see how far you can kick one. Keep track in the classroom for longest cone kick.
Ask the instructor what chapter in the textbook covers peeing in a bottle.
Ask the instructor what chapter in the textbook covers how to wash your fuel tanks with the window washing squeegee.
Ask the instructor when the carrier recruiters are coming in. Then get a big gong set up in the room and when you think the recruiter is full of b.s. hit the gong. (only people old enough to have watched "The Gong Show" will appreciate this)
--Don't hit the gong right as the recruiter says "I'm from Swift...."
That should keep you busy next week. -
Gong? Or Bong?

if you think you are bored now, wait till you get the logbook class...you will be pulling out your hair......
then too, when you go to work for your new employer, do not be surprised that you will be bored in THEIR classroom as well.....
now too, there IS a time line the school MUST maintain for the record, in case any representative of the bank, loan company, accreditation organization, or state come in to visit... all school's MUST provide proof of classroom time as per requirements set forth by any of the above governing bodies...
so yes, you are bored....wait till you get to do the maneuvers some day, i guarantee you that you will be bored after a few hours if not days of straight backing, you will lust for more....
just remember, you can lust for more yard time, road time, etc, but if you are tested by the trucking company, or when you are with your driver-trainer and you screw up (and you will), be prepared for your driver-trainer to biotch at you for NOT paying attention in school....you had better not say you were bored......then........Last edited: Jan 29, 2011
