You know, thinking about it is the worst part. I had a self imposed rule, to never step on a steer tire to get in a truck, and for the most part, it worked. I bet I drove 10 conventionals for every cabover. The 362 Pete I drove, we called "long nose cabovers", because they were really nice trucks, hardly an issue backing in somewhere, and comfy too. Not all though, the IH Transtar I drove was a good truck, rode awful, and I didn't care for the K100, and the less said about the Freightliner set back, the better but the Petes were nice trucks. Heck, I'd even take an Astro, they were nice trucks too.
Bottom falling out on pre-emission trucks?

I was never in a Pete or KW world, tried them out few times, so can't say anything much about them. They are nice to ride, at the same time I'm more concerned about driving the least and making the most, so sticking with the frtlnr S60 for as long as I can get parts.

I owned a couple of IH cabovers
One with the normal steer and spring ride drives and one with the set back steer and air ride drives .
the set back with air ride drives was a smooth ride and was comfortable for me to drive .
And I liked the short wheelbase , and I had very little repairs with the big cam 350 Cummins and a 9 or 13 speed .
I kinda liked the doghouse , plenty of room for the little cooler with healthy snacks and room for the dog to sit while we were driving .
I preferred the vinyl cover to the carpet on the doghouse .
Keep the vinyl armor all’ed and
You could slide right across it into the sleeper .
A Bc Cummins and 9 speed will last a long time .
I had one Bc Cummins that used a gallon of oil every tank of fuel , but it was very reliable , I never had any problems with it .Another Canadian driver, Vampire, Dino soar and 4 others Thank this. -

Depends, anytime you cross the line to a truck that is in high demand, people have deep pockets, and this kind of misses my point. If you have a jillion bucks, want to go hobby trucking in a classic 359, by all means, there you go. The classic car hobby today is no different. I'm saying, if a person really wants to do this, and make a buck, 6 figure trucks, especially to start, is the kiss of death. There was, among others, a '87 W900, big sleeper, Cat motor,,,$42,000. Throw them $35 cash, be a quality truck and would haul the mail until you make such a success of yourself, THEN buy the $150 grand, classic Pete.Another Canadian driver, Vampire, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this.

You say no shortage of Eaton parts? They have all but stopped producing 402 Eaton parts. I am not totally sure when they hit the scene however I am sure they were popular through the mid nineties. SQHD Rockwell’s is like pulling hens teeth to find pieces for. There just isn’t a demand so time moves on. So you buy a truck and right off the bat go to updating it it gets expensive in a hurry. Way cheaper to buy the truck you want in my opinion. Now if your capable of doing it yourself then that’s a horse of a different color.
For the most part our “outlaw” days are over. I hate that too I really do. Maybe so much so I will probably be one of the last of the last hold outs. For no other reason than I canlarry2903, Feedman, Another Canadian driver and 14 others Thank this. -
Sorry, I said anything without research, as usual, with automatics, I'd have to think 10/13 speeds would be in piles, like VW motors in the 70's. Regardless, I think, history will repeat itself. After deregulation, there was so much freight, ANYBODY with a truck could haul something. Many farmers threw in the towel and used their old Freightshaker to haul diapers. Don't laugh, when I had my truck( late 80's, leased to a power only RR can hauler), there were several farmers, cool guys, that did better with their old Mack hauling TP out of Green Bay,, than at the farm. As people get more and more fed up with regulations, and costs, people have already shown a lack of interest in trucking today, there will be a revolt, of sorts. And not this Canada thing, a MAJOR meltdown, right here. We already can't supply the public with goods, and it's getting worse. In the name of money, gonna have to move the freight, and I think outlaws, for lack of a better word, will again resurface, no ELD, no DEF, just a old '87 KWhopper with a big old manual Cat motor, and falling through the cracks,,again.. Maybe not to the extent of the 80's, but there will simply be no other way to get goods from the factory to the public, just like in the 70's. VIVA LA REVOLUTION,,count me in,,,,hey, who are you? Where are you taking me, HELP,,,Chinatown,,I went too far,,Last edited: Feb 7, 2022
