In my 3 different conversations I had with Rangers during inspection they all said that anything off road like farm and construction equipment can be freely publicly sold without title. On road stuff shouldn’t be because it needs title to register to use on roads and if buyer buys it and then applies for title and it shows a lien or stolen buyer is gonna lose. BUT. They all also said the state doesn’t want to get stuck with a vehicle that doesn’t run or is not road worthy so they ask the last known person that had ties to it in the system if they want it or not. If they do then buyer looses. If not then buyer assumes all debt and fees and is free to keep it.
They said that if the vehicle is less than 20 years old and comes up dirty and is running and in good shape they can issue salvage title and auction it off with normal police auction items to public. Buyer will have to go back to auction and buy it again if they want it bad enough. If it is 20 years or more it is considered “exempt” and the state doesn’t want to be stuck with it so the Rangers rarely deny a title re issue on something that old.Oxbow, pete781693, Coffey and 3 others Thank this. -

When I was in Florida last year at the auctions, I seen a Pete over to the side with “not for sale no title” on the windshield. Apparently not all try to sell them….?pete781693, Coffey, Last Call and 2 others Thank this. -
Two of the trucks I had to apply for missing title were no sweat as far as being clean were concerned. I knew were they came from and their history. One was my greatgrandfaters Diamond T. Title got lost years ago and was no big deal but I needed it to register it in my name from my uncles. The other was my ‘72 White 4000. It never had a title issued to the original owners. They never registered it for road use. TXI concrete bought it new and it was used in the quarry and mixing plant in New Braunfels it’s whole life. If they did use it on a construction job they just got a temp road use permit to drive it to the location.
The third one was a 1965 Pontiac Lemans. That one made us nervous because that car had bee swapping hands a dozen times in the area among Pontiac collectors and a long time rumor that went along with it was it may have not been completely paid off to the bank before it was blown up and parked 40+ years ago and original owner never got title for it. No one wanted to put any restoration into it cause they feared the worse on the title. Well it turned out that it did have a lien but the original bank had been defunct since 1984 so it was free and clear by default.wore out, pete781693, Coffey and 1 other person Thank this. -
