Maybe my trainer needs to be trained then because he did not carry a box of DEF but that is a good idea to do.

We have more than a few newer trucks with the tank on the right (wrong) side. -
Paccar is famous for placing on right side

I kept an empty DEF container in case I got too low and couldn't get it at the pump due to the fact I drove a KW with the tank on the passenger side. Usually I would try and pick off-peak hours to either go in the island the opposite way, or tie up the island next to me using that DEF hose. DEF does have a shelf life (although I don't recall how long it is), so if keeping one in the truck then you need to keep that in mind, as well as issues if it freezes.

I been buying it in 2.5 gallon containers at $16 a container. Some of the trucks I drive have small 11 gallon tanks but most of them with DEF have 23 gallon tanks. NO one at any of my customers knew what to do about filling them. The two local TS have no pumps so they rip people off with the containers.
Just as a precaution so not to deal with a derated truck, I left some containers at my customer's places so I had somehting just in case. This past week I was going through the oil at one place and notice that the container was missing. So I asked the shop super about it and he said that they used it to clean their forklift and other equipement with - I can't understand why they didn't smell it but they seemed to think it was some sort of cleaning solvent that you used in the truck. I left it up to their driver to explain what it is and why it isn't used to clean anything. -
Forgot what they said Shelf life was but it was more than a year.

Having a spare DEF in the box on hand can be beneficial when u are running thru areas where "major" truck stops aren't at every other exit. Especially if u get caught up in traffic and can't seem to find a stop with it at the pump ANYWHERE! As I say, "It is better to be prepared and not need it than, not have it and need it." We keep spare stuff in our tractor, for those just in case emergencies that seem to happen to even the best pre/post trip checking trucker. It will cost u less now than the break down will later!
Truckermania and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Just be mindful of the temperature at which DEF will freeze, depending on where you are and where you keep it.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
I was told by the kenworth dealer that the DEF at the pump is no good it often clog up the system and it coast $2000.to burn the filters out and I should stop useding it so I buy the box DEF but now I notice that it coast $20-$25 per Box these days pilot has been selling there own brand now and its cheaper than the Blue DEF .they say that the Blue is much cleaner and don't clogged up the system like the one at the pump
Truckermania Thanks this. -
I wonder how much you would spend at those kind of prices vs. using the pump DEF, even if you need to clean the filters more often.
You would spend $2 grand more in about 20 tanks of DEF.
Do you need your filters burned out that often?
