Yesterday, while driving through Nebraska, at the 233 yardstick, a truck on the westbound right shoulder decided to cut across the bigroad and go back east. He took a 4 wheeler and a bigtruck with him. The 4wheeler got pinned underneath his trailer and the other rig completely blocked the eastbound lanes.
I was listening to the IPOD when I heard a driver yelling BRAKECHECK EASTBOUND! BRAKECHECK!!!
I hit the brakes and hit the hazards and start scrubbing off some speed. I came to a complete halt and set my airbrakes. A couple trucks behind me, a CRST truck was in the right lane, came to a complete halt and hit his hazards.
Somehow, a Werner truck missed seeing the stopped traffic nailed the CRST trailer. I heard an explosion and saw CRST's cargo of beer go everywhere. Werner swerved at the last moment and hit the trailer with the right side of his tractor. The impact peeled the entire cab away from the driver. The guy was hurt bad, but lucky as hell to be alive.
ANYWAYS...people, if everyone in front of you has their hazards on thats the universal sign of a full on brakecheck. STOP YOUR TRUCK in the lane you are in! And for your safety, do not get out or remove your seatbelt until you are sure the person behind you has come to a complete stop. The CRST truck had a team and one of the drivers was in the sleeper. Talk about a rude awakening.
Speaking of CBs, have you ever noticed that the largecars are rarely in these type crashes?
Brakecheck for non CB users.

Oh, in case you want to know why that westbound driver decided to cut across the median, well, you cant always expect foreign drivers to know the customs and laws of this land.
-
I drive for CRST. I came thru the scene several hours after you I think. The only thing left when I got there were the 2 trucks in the median. But we got a qualcomm message from safety about the accident. Funny thing is I should have been right there with you guys but at the last minute I decided to do laundry, eat a breakfast buffet and shower that morning. I took me a 4 hour unscheduled break.

The CRST driver did everything right. He was at a complete stop, centered in the right lane. I wonder if your safetyman will tell that particular driver that this was a preventable.
There were 2 trucks in the median. One was a white Columbia, the other a maroon cornbinder. The white truck is the one that made the left turn from the right shoulder. The cornbinder was sitting completely across the eastbound lanes. The cops had a wrecker pull it back into the median so that eastbound could move. -
From the way it looked when I got there it appeared the maroon truck rear ended the other one. Just the way they parked them once they drug them off the roadway I guess. No telling what safety will say but I was impressed that finally they didnt blame us! To hear our safety dept talk you would think we are just another CDL mill company...
I guess thats what you get when you pay .22 cents a mile! -
Troopers had westbound completly shutdown and detouring traffic at the previous exit.
I figured out how the Werner wreck happend, but didnt know how the first wreck I saw played out.
Kinda wish I took pictures... but that would have been dangerous considering everyone was break checkin westbound to have a peek. -
