braking the rules? or suck it up?

    I think you do an awful lot of complaining for a newbie. With 6 months of training you must be almost a professional by now. Will you put the pictures up on here so we can all see the damage that he did? Let me guess, you already erased them.

    Request a new trainer. You could learn some good things from him but also pick up bad habits. He shouldnt be driving with u on top bunk or talking on handset, its dangerous and against the law no matter how old school he is. No pre or post trip? Adjustments to the logs? I dont know dude. Something sounds odd.

    I fall into the 'old school' category when it comes to log books. When I was tired I stopped and slept. When I felt like running, I ran hard. The time I spent sleeping didn't always match what the log book said I was doing at that time. I drank coffee, looked at the map, talked on the CB, all the 'bad ' habits you speak of. If you want to truck, do what you have to do until your training is over. After you go solo do it your way.

    The crap they taught you in school is just that CRAP! Now in the real world there is no black and white it all grey out here in the real world . If you try to obey every rule to a T you wil never leave the parking lot .

    You do the best you can to live by the rules but you learn to adjust as you go along . Just be as safe as you can be and still get the job dine that you were hired to do .

    The main thing to remember is be a safe driver first and all the other things will fall into place as get more time and miles under your belt. Everyone fudges a little here and there .

    There is no such thing as a totally compliant perfect driver because we are all human and we just do the best we can. Tht is all you can do is do the best you can every time you in the truck .

    Multitasking is all about "Clock Speed" dude.

    You simply prioritize your tasks. Revisit the main task several times while performing alternate tasks. If I adjust my road speed and following distance I can safely tune the radio, drink my coffee, look at the GPS, or talk on the phone. It is done millions, and millions of times everyday by pretty much every truck on the road.

    If the human skill set was maxed out with simply operating a CMV, the ditches would be FULL of trucks. There is a safety margin between a safely operating CMV and an out of control truck headed for the ditch.

    Some of the "clock cycles" within that safety margin can be assigned to secondary tasks when done so by a Professional driver.

    You need to do what YOU think is best not what we would do. You need to make a decision i know your looking for advice and that's what you just got. I'm not trying to be a smart @@@ but only you know what's best for you. Good Luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    I agree, With my students I get LESS miles than I do solo (e-logs) for the first 3 weeks, 4th week I get around 3,000 miles, 5th and 6th are the good weeks. I do this purposfully, because I am awake with them, every step of the way, I walk to every shipper, and I tell the shipper, "This is my student, He/she is the boss, im here to observe, and teach." And then I stop dealing with the shipper unless the student asks me a question or there is a snag. I work for a 'mill' company (swift), I am still green in aspects, But that does not mean I can not do the best job I can, with what I am handed (Crap company, pushed to mentor in order to make a livable wage) I enjoy what I do, #### anyone that says im 'not ready' to teach someone. I can teach someone, somthing, on anything, even if its how ignorant some people can be on the subject :)

    Standard Speech said to all my students when I teach:

    :Doesnt the book say to do XYZ?"

    "There are 3 of the 4 ways to do things i can teach you, my way, swifts way,DOT way. I am going to teach you those. Your way will be a combonation of those 3 things. I will never ask you to do somthing your uncomfortable with, if you want to spend 2 horus on a pre trip. Do it. If you want to take the trailer into swifts shop because a hose is hanging and dont wanna zip tie it like I do. Do it. Because this is how you learn what works for you."

    That approach has cost me money.
    But that approach makes me a better trainer than most.
