Hey everyone. I'm trying to get some information on the best companies to work for.
A little background. I have just started my truck driving school in Sanford, Florida and I will be doing approx. 3 weeks of training before picking the company I want to work for.
Now, here is where I need some info. The owner of the school I'm attending is really pushing Stevens, but what I have seen online is mixed. The owner is retired from Stevens after 25 years. He said he enjoyed working with them and the company treated him well.
Here are a few things I'm concerned about. I missed the part in the paperwork that said the company I choose would be transporting me to who-knows-where for training. That's fine and good, but I need to know if anyone knows of companies out of Central Florida that do over the road and out of state transport I can interview with.
It's cool with me if I have to go out of state for training, not complaining. But I want to know what I'm getting myself into first and not left holding the bag in the middle of nowhere. I have nothing in my past that would prevent me from getting a job, I've been open and honest all the way on tickets and an accident. I know I can pass a drug test and physical.
I also need to know if it will be an issue for a woman by herself with any companies. I would rather take jobs driving back and forth along the east coast, but I can take whatever they give me if I need to.
Ok, so, after all that, lol, any recommendations? Is Stevens the way to go or not? I really value my home time and don't want to find myself dealing with dispatch begging me to come in when they know I need to be off.
Someone told me to apply with KLLM and US Xpress, which I already have. Waiting for word from them. Are these reputable places?
I need some good, honest answers.
Thanks guys, and keep on truckin'![]()

You will, as a new driver, get what they give you (in most cases). As rookies, we do not get to pick and choose. Even experienced drivers, for the most part, take what is offered. This ain't no candy store!
If you value your home time TOO much, you're probably in for some disappointment. Most carriers try to get you home every couple of weeks or so, but, keep in mind.....carriers make money moving freight and they must satisfy their customers with timely, safe service. Your need for hometime is secondary to that.

RESPECT, Everett and Starmushrooms Thank this. -
my dad drove for Stevens for 2 years and he doesn't have anything bad to say about them. The only thing I don't like about them is the Dumb and Dumber training they do....after you get out of your trainers truck they put you in a truck with another new driver and make you team for a little while before you go out solo.
KLLM is a good company, USX if you want a auto transmission you might like them.

I really appreciate the info so far guys. I'm doing all my homework with this as I go, but I've been doing some serious studying for the past year also. I'm doing this solo to start and hopefully will be able to bring my husband in to do teaming in a year. He's on the edge of jumping in, but we have some things to finish first before we can do that.
I'm flexible on the home time part. I would like at least a few days off without a phone call, but I know it happens and I'm willing to take it as they need me.
Trucking is a passion I have had since I was a kid. I grew up around trucks and my father did shipments between Mass and Maine for the phone company, so I'm pretty familiar with the away time and the lifestyle on the road.
As far as my driving record goes, it's pretty small stuff. One seat belt violation and a speeding ticket for 5 MPH over a year ago that I won in court, so it's on my record, but shouldn't count, I hope. I have one accident that wasn't my fault, they backed into me at a light. So that's pretty much it. No arrests or anything like that. I've had an FBI background before for my husband's immigration paperwork, so I think I'm pretty clean, nothing exciting lol.
Stevens looks pretty good, and Ocala isn't that bad of a drive from where I am, maybe an hour.
I wanted a straight answer about company's that are local, and the other school I looked at dodged the question, so I went with the school I'm at now. He was really honest about what I'm looking at as far as local company's go. I can't relocate, unfortunately.Last edited: Oct 3, 2010

Swift is a very good choice !!!!!
R U near Eustis area, windy hill may hire you.
Knight and Werner R in lakeland, but personally would avoid them both.
List your home area, that would help ...........Starmushrooms Thanks this. -
Hey Starmushrooms, I went to TDI too! Back in '96. Lastamericanhippy had some really good advice! Windy Hill is pretty good company. My cousin worked for them and loved it! They kept him very busy. They are a small mom and pop company and their main terminal is in Wisconsin but they have a terminal in Eustis too. You can make really good money there because a lot of their loads are multiple stops and you get extra money for each individual stop. Another really good thing about Windy Hill is they leave you alone to do your job. That aren't anal like all the other companies and you aren't constantly on the qualcomm. Windy Hill runs mostly east coast and heartland they do not go to the west coast. A nice thing my cousin liked was that they do a lot of home depot's and walmarts and such so while everyone is hustling to find a parking spot at truckstops you have permission to be sleeping at the home depots. One other thing, make sure they show you and you practice at throwing chains. It's getting that time of year and you don't want to be caught unprepared. Whatever you decision, stay away from the mega-companies! Ie: Stevens, Swift, Werner, England etc... Keep in mind that TDI gets paid to send you to those companies so they are going to push them no matter what! I would definitely give Windy Hill a shot, they are actually hiring right now, I just saw an ad in the local paper for Windy Hill drivers. Good luck to you and welcome to the forum!
Starmushrooms Thanks this. -
you have to have many yrs of exp for a good company most are 5 to 7 yrs.

Chompi, I was looking at Windy Hill also, I will give them a shout during training. You are correct, I am using TDI. While they pushed Stevens, I was very happy with the recruiters honesty. I came in there, told him exactly what I wanted and he didn't give me any crap about it. I like that, that was exactly what I was looking for, and I don't have to stress about traffic in South Orlando at 7AM.
Anything that gets me along the East Coast I would be happy with. While I'm open to the west coast, I grew up in the Northeast and Southeast and know the area like the back of my hand. I'm trying baby steps first, and want to go with an area I'm comfortable with. -
i live here in orlando so i know how hard it could be to find a good company. but if you like home time honestly stay away from stevens because when i talked to a recruiter a yea ago he said drivers get one of to holidays if they are lucky, christmas or thanksgiving. alot of drivers say that stevens is not big on hometime. but if i were you id try windy hill or us xpress. i would stay away from swift because they dont pay no money. last time i checked it was under .30 a mile so i wouldnt work for that. just food for thought

Yeah man, howdy neighbor! I am just down the road from you. Definitely give Windy Hill a shout. I know a lot of guys who did well there. Good luck man!
