This is a question i have for anyone who has experience or knowledge about a situation like this. I applied to a training school and they told me i was approved to drive for a company. That is great and all, but the thing is they require a 14 month contract in return for pay for the school. I will be getting my licence in the next two weeks through the school, and i'm expected to be at the companies' orientation the following monday after getting my licence. I haven't signed any contract yet with the company. My question is; if i find another trucking company with better pay and benefits willing to hire recent grads, and also tuition reimbursement can i break the implied arrangement i have with this current without them dumping the whole cost on me at once?

If you sign it, it is not an implied arrangement. If you have signed nothing, you are free to do as you please, but you will have to pay the cost of the school from your own pocket, or find another company who will.
diasporatransporter88 and Chinatown Thank this. -
what he said, exactly the reason I didn't go the company route. Left my job search wide open
-
If you haven't signed a contract, then there is no contract. Werner does that a lot at some CDL schools. The schools try to intimidate the student by implying they are obligated to work for "XYZ" company. Don't say anything or discuss anything with the school and quietly leave at graduation for the company you want.
Many schools really push hard for Werner, US Express, Swift and a couple of others leaving the students to think that's their only choices. Some even pass out applications to the students for those particular companies and the students feel obligated to fill them out.
Did you finance the school on your own or through the school itself? -
School is financing, just that Hogan prehired me.
-
Pre-hire doesn't mean much; there's no obligation to that. If you go to Hogan, they will reimburse tuition, but so will many other companies.
Which other companies have you considered? Which state do you live in? -
I live in Missouri, im willing to also relocate. I have been searching trucking companies in GA like Melton truck lines, but i am just looking.
-
Melton is OK. Do you want flatbed only?
BuckeyeKev Thanks this. -
no, but it seems flatbed pays the most
-
That depends really on the company and how good they are at finding freight.
Flatbed is a good career though; I liked it but also liked reefers and tankers.
I'll give you a few names that hire new CDL grads and you can decide which you like.
Start submitting applications today; don't wait any longer.
Waggoners Trucking Co.
Trailiner Corp.
Decker Truck Line - flatbed & reefer
Magnum Ltd.
Tyson Foods
Pride Transport - flatbed & reefer
Earl Henderson Trucking - guaranteed minimum weekly paycheck and new trucks have Apu's.
Are you interested in tankers? Several hire new CDL grads, but you will need hazmat/tanker endorsements and TWIC. Some may require a passport for Canada runs.BuckeyeKev and diasporatransporter88 Thank this.
