I have tried for years, unsuccessfully, to get my hands on some green Kona beans. Kona Joe's one of my favorites, but I think they roast them a little to long. I like a light medium roast generally, although lately I've been on a blonde roast kick. I usually avoid Starbucks, but a friend bought me some of their Christmas Blonde roast, and I must say I really liked it. But lava soil, high altitude beans are my favorites...don't get me started on Jamaican Blue Mountain. Both it and Kona are spendy but worth every penny to me.

I used to get asked all the time " so whats your favorite coffee"
My answer was well today I have this (insert name of coffee)
Bottom line, if you like it, then it is good coffee.Crusader66, Broke Down 69, Lepton1 and 2 others Thank this. -
Coffee, when it is right out of the roaster has very little flavor. It can take up to 36 hours after the actual roasting to develop the full flavor. Coffee beans have water and carbohydrates, when you heat them the produce a combination of gasses. This is what makes the bean puff up, sort of like popcorn. have you ever had a soda that has too much carbonation? It has no taste right. It is sort of the same thing.

You can order green coffee form Sweet Maria's. Tom gets good coffees.
I did what I called the triple roasted Kona. I used to get green from ( and this is not a joke) Bong Brothers. A good farm on the island. It was a mix of light, medium and dark.
Very popular coffee.
Part of what makes Kona coffee expensive is that it is grown in the US. The cost of farming is higher. Land, Labor and the related things.
Jamaican Blue Mountain...There is some history behind the price of the coffee. Back in 1951 hurricane charlie hit Jamaica. Did 50 million in damage, lot of people missing, injured and dead. The property damage was staggering.
They needed a lot of money. The only country to step up and help with loans was Japan. Part of the repayment plans included coffee. For a long time, almost all the coffee grown in Jamaica was sold to Japan. Coffee not sold to japan had a tariff placed on it. The tariff money was then used for cash payments on the loans. The loans from that time have been payed off. Japan still does a lot of lending and development there.
Legal battles of the name and use of Blue Mountain have gone on for years. The first coffee to use the designation was the Wallenford Estate. They are one othe the largest growers of coffee in Jamaica. The original plantation is on Blue Mountain. Then it is a mountain and has a lot of land, other growers came and started using the Blue Mountain designation in order to cash in on Wallenfords reputation.scottlav46, Broke Down 69, Lepton1 and 2 others Thank this. -
This, to me, is what I like. Everybody has their own niche. Someone builds model ships. Someone collects rocks. Some people roast coffee. Some people golf.
All of us have something that makes us tick, and has a subject to bring to the table. I may not give two fat farts about model ships, but I admire the passion and skill. -
I vacationed on the Big Island a few years ago and took a tour of a coffee plantation. Fascinating, with the entire history of coffee, how the picking season lasts for months, the elevation affects the flavor, etc.Oxbow, Crusader66, Big Don and 1 other person Thank this. -

I was in a hurry the other day and poured some Petro coffee into my mug on my way to the John.
It tasted like crap...
