With an 18do those 3.90s will be fine unless you are one of those guys that wants to run 80 mph all the time.

You hit on something here. I had never heard of anything other than a 13do, but I have pretty limited knowledge of transmissions dating back to the late 90s. My thought was it was either a misprint or just an older model I wasn't familiar with. I'm heading out the door now to go look it over. I'll post my findings later today.

It could very well be. Obviously an 18 is a 13 except an 18 you split the basement. See if there's a tranny model number on the door sticker. If I was feeling more ambitious I'd post a link to Eatons tranny website.

Not a criticism, a serious question.
Why the need or want to buy a truck right now?
Do you have a bsiness plan?
If you do, are you planning to lease to a company get your own authority and run independent?.
Should your choice be independent, do you have a trailer in mind?

    The questions run long.

I have always planned to buy my own truck, it was simply a matter of when. I have a standing offer from a more or less local outfit who does specialty hauling for the aviation industry. OW work using their specialized trailers. Catch is I have to have my own rig capable of pulling 100k pound loads. Pay is very good with enough work to have me burning down my 70 every week. Ultimately, I will have my own numbers so I can try and put a few more trucks on the road by the time I'm ready to get out of the seat myself...sort of a retirement plan...but that's down the road a good bit.

With respect to the truck I went and looked at today, it's not going to happen. Looked good on paper and pictures but a complete lack of service records and a slightly evasive attitude on the sellers part has me writing this one off. The search will go on, but when I do buy it'll be a truck I'm absolutely sure of, even if I have to pony up big money for a brand new glider.

My truck has 3.90s in it. You are going to love it for pulling heavy.

Takes a lot of planning and resources to put and keep a truck on the road. You may be better off building the truck to needed specs than trying to buy it ready to go. Chances are that your going to have to make compromises somewhere when purchasing a market truck.

This is an excellent point and one that I have started to realize myself. The price of new, while stomach turning, could be offset to some degree by having exactly what I need out of the gate.
