Wow, I just can't believe everything I'm finding out. Tens of thousands of dollars that have gone unbilled or uncollected. A daily average of 5.25 trucks setting idle on the road. That represents more than 10% of our total trucks doing...nothing. Every day. Roughly $30,000 a week in lost revenue, if anyone bothered to bill or collect it. I need a stiff drink and 30mg of Valium, not for me but for the boss to keep him from stroking out when I show him all this. On the one hand I feel sorry for him, but it is his company and his ultimate responsibility.

    More later...

When I was working in the office while looking over an equipment list, I found 2 curtain van trailers at locations the company forgot they owned.

When I told the owner, he just replied, "there's probably even more out there."

Good luck trying to effect any real change on the system...

Well, at least so far I know where all the trucks and trailers are.

It seems an office environment has a bad effect on good people. I'd rather just heal up and get back on the road. What was supposed to be me helping out and learning something has morphed into something entirely different. I'm keeping an eye out for snipers now.

Bah, I have NO SYMPATHY for the owner! As you say, it is his company and his ultimate responsibility. It never fails to amaze me the way paperwork is handled in a lot of places, not just trucking companies.
We see in the news, arrests for embezzlement on an almost weekly basis, and a lot of them, are in state or local government agencies! The thought processes of people here in Utah are just pitiful. "Oh, that's old Clarabelle. She's been with me for thirty five years, and I'd trust her with any and everything." Never realizing that sweet little old dear Clarabelle has been cooking the books and stealing from him for at least thirty of those thirty five years.
There is a reason that both governments and businesses need an outside auditor to come in and check literally everything every few years.
Or as my wife has always said, "Trust, but verify."

Um, you might find that those snipers will remember you, when you get back on the road. Just a reminder, and a little something to help you sleep better tonight.....;)

Thanks @Big Don now I've got another festering worry...lol. Frankly, I don't expect many of the current office staff to survive the coming purge. It's going to be bloody and at the end of it I may have little choice but to come in from the cold.

I just wanted to learn a little of the business. But if it come right down to it I do know how to lay a bear trap.

So why do you think a purge is on the horizon?

    Question.
What has the turnover rate for the office been for the last few years?

Airborne, Oxbow and Broke Down 69 Thank this.

When a person with zero office experience can, in the space of a little more than a week, identify massive shortcomings in billing, accounts payable and dispatch efficiency, changes have to be made. This isn't an isolated incident involving one or two people, it's a systemic failure going backs months for sure, likely longer, at this point I've only gotten back 7 months...and I'm sure I haven't found everything, just the glaringly obvious. Monday I plan on showing the boss what I've found and recommending he turn it all over to a qualified financial auditor...im way over my head. As for office personnel turnover, it has been very low over the last 5 years. Only two have less time than that. Was three but they were already shown the door as previously reported.
