Ok. Things went slightly better than expected. By that I mean the boss didn't have a stroke or heart attack. Other than that is was not a good morning. I had to set in with him for about 2.5 hours outlining what I'd found and my ideas for handling it. With regard to the financials, I told him I was totally unqualified to dig deeper or offer any suggestion other than turn it over to an independent financial expert. I pointed out that my reason for looking at it in the first place was mearly to figure out how we booked, scheduled and billed loads, not to be some sort of amatuer detective. Obviously when you bring to the attention of a business owner enormous (at least to me) amounts of unbilled and uncollected money, it's a bit difficult to redirect his attention to other matters, but with some effort I was able to get him to focus on my outline to keep more trucks moving more often. It was gratifying to see him begin to nod and agree with my ideas while at the same time asking very probing and direct questions that in a couple instances had me taking quick notes and realizing that while he may have made some mistakes, as we all have, he's extremely smart and quick witted. When our meeting broke up I hobbled down to the shop to kind of decompress and talk to a mechanic I really like to bs with from time to time. After a few minutes a helper came and got us to come out and see something. A steady parade of box toting former employees. I limped back up (through the back door, being the bold brave soul I am) to find that I now occupy to office directly across from the boss, complete with an inspiring view of the warehouse wall. Nothing has really been said yet but I fear that, at least with this company, my driving days are over and I'm not at all ready for that.
