We all grieve in our own way and our own time. My sister has lost her husband and was totally lost. I'll tell you the same thing I told her. While working thru your grief, baby steps are perfectly acceptable. You will get thru this, and you do have friends who are willing to listen and help in their own fumbling way.

BD, I started to write a long story about how I coped when my Dad died. Everybody on this thread has expressed heartfelt condolences, and I share their feeling, but decided that maybe you don't really need hear anymore. Let me just say that in my experience the empty hole inside of you will slowly be replaced by memories that will make you laugh.

Well I hope it is the start of a new trend and not just an effect of emotional exhaustion, but I got the first good nights sleep I've had in a week last night. Today my head seems a little clearer and it's easier to think. This is a good thing because my Dad is still in a haze and quite a lot of the legalities have fallen to me. Tomorrow I should receive copies of my Mothers death certificate and then I'll be able to have her will probated. Lawyers. God what a curse. Every which way I turn it seems there's another meeting with the family lawyer I have to take...and that SOB bills about $300 per hour. Guess my plan to go back to work tomorrow are going to have to be shelved as it's beginning to look like the next week is going to get chewed up pretty well dealing with all of this. At least it'll keep me busy, albeit dealing endlessly with a situation I'd much rather not. Such are the responsibilities and obligations of the firstborn.

    More later...

I can't speak for the USA......but dealing with an estate is a lot of work. I would try and get as much done before going back out on the road again. There is so much back n forth between the bank n lawyers n places it drives you crazy. Being OTR and settling an estate are not good bed partners. Trying to drive and hit deliveries and calling the bank or trying to get something signed just don't work.
    Luck
Edit: Your lawyer IS your friend. It seems expensive but they do what needs to get done.

When you get copies of things, like death certificate, make sure and get a lot of certified copies. I must have used at least 18 copies for all the filings when my mother passed. Plus you need to have a few extra for in case of. I think that I got 25 copies. Something that will be a major help. If your dad is the executor of the estate, and really is not capable or just does not think he can do it. GET power of attorney documents signed. May not be a bad thing all around to have one for him as well. Also consider medical POA for your dad. It will save a lot of time and trouble.

The big thing is get lots of certified copies

First born or not, if you have siblings you should not be totally stuck with dealing with everything by yourself.

The volume of work dealing with all this is just astounding. My Mother's Will is quite complex, not monetarily all that goes to Dad, but materially as she has left many little things to many different people. I have to collect the items, submit it to probate and then see to their delivery, none of this is even remotely possible on the road or even working behind a desk. I've been steady working on this since about 0700 today and haven't made a dent in it.

As for the lawyer, I didn't like the little prick before all this and I'm liking him even less now. Dad's lawyer, not mine.

I requested 30 copies of the DC, didn't want to come up short. As far as to POA goes, I've had complete and medical since my Dad had his stroke last year, he wanted to make sure it was me in control of things not any of the rest of the family, some of which are Presbyterians and horse thieves.

My sister has been a big help to both me and my Dad. She's been here cooking and cleaning and trying to keep a cheerful mood, insofar as that is possible, but she's not equipped to handle the legalities. She's a very bright and capable nurse with a Masters degree but she ain't got a lick of business sense. To her credit, she understands this and trusts me to handle the formalities. Of course I will keep her informed about what I'm doing and what's happening, but it's better for all if I bear this particular burden.
