Woke up yesterday and nearly hit the floor. Lamp table beside the bed saves me from that indignity, decided maybe I might need to have it looked at. Doctor ordered an xray, then said he needed to see more detail and i got worried. Off to the hospital for an MRI. Was told I'd here about it today, but another doctor came in with a walking boot and instructions to stay off it. Worried now. Then they took me down and performed a drain and removed 6.5 ounces of fluid from my ankle and lower calf. Now I'm starting to understand. I'm really injured, not just hurt. Doctor calls today and tells me what I've pretty much figured out for myself...i have a ruptured Achilles tendon. Doc said the only thing keeping my heel in place was the sheath that encased the tendon was still intact. Couldn't figure out how I kept walking and working without it letting go or me crapping out from the pain. Dad always Sid if you're gonna be stupid you better be tough. So I'm in a boot for two weeks, then they'll reevaluate it to see if I'm going to need surgery. Down for a month minimum...perhaps as many as four.

Bloody Hell.

Maybe they can use ya in the office to teach dispatch just how a truck driver works, maybe smack your dispatcher in the back of the head for sending you and some of those crazy runs also, LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!

You could get a blister on your transmission button finger and not be able to shift the truck. Then what do you do.

I can see you cats are your usual comic selves. Sorry for the absence, I've been working some extended hours trying to prove a point.

Started out like this. I was being regaled by one of the office drones with tales of how drivers would never believe how hard they worked in the office. Mind you, I was being told this while the individual in question was standing in front of my desk drinking coffee and generally being almost as useful as a burnt out light bulb. Fast forward to lunch time, where everyone except me disappeared for over two hours and of course thats when the feces hit the oscillating cooling device. One of our primary customers loads had not been covered and they called, rather irate, that they had a load that had to go that was refusing to get up and deliver itself. Now this load wasn't on my board but obviously I had to do something since I was the lone soldier in the fort. I must point out at this juncture that diplomacy, while not completely unknown to me, ain't my strong suit. However, in this case I put on my best diplomatic efforts and assured the customer all would be made right in one big, hairy hurry...of course I had no freaking idea how I was going to pull that move off, but I bought myself a little room to maneuver. About now, a benevolent God intervened in the form of a driver, supposed to be off for two more days, showing up to say he was ready to go out if we had anything. Hallelujah and Amen. Brother do I. So off he goes and my stress level drops for a minute until I start wondering who dropped the ball. Did a little digging to find out it was the previously mentioned drone. Finally everyone shows back up from lunch and I let the boss know what had happened and what I had done to make it right and then things went really nuts. Drone accuses me of trying to undermine them and then told me I was just a driver and had no business stinking up the office spaces. Diplomacy and injury completely forgotten, I get up from behind my desk to show this snotwad the error of their ways...it was going to get bloody. Then the boss's phone goes off as he's positioning himself between drone and death. Primary customer on the pipe. Wants to know who the new dispatcher is. Says he's the only one he's dealt with there that got results. Asked for me to be assigned to his account. Now we're on speakerphone and the drone is looking surprisingly like the guest of honor at a lynching. I thanked the man for his kind words, explained I was just a driver recovering from an injury and would be returning to the road roughly 3 minutes after the doctor said I could. Little more talk between owner and customer and the call ended...as did the drones employment with us. Boss calls me in, closes the door, sings my praises and asked if I had any ideas to streamline the dispatch side. One or two I said and proceeded to elaborate for an hour and a half. At the end of it all he told me to work out the fine details and let him see the whole plan.

So, for the last few days I've been doing 16 hour days going over the way we book, schedule and Bill loads and I gotta say I can't believe we are still in business. Total chaos. A Charlie Foxtrot of the highest order...and little old me, with a week in the office with a mandate to fix it all. After this, I take on hunger and peace in the Middle East. Stay tuned.

It seems an office environment has a bad effect on good people. I'd rather just heal up and get back on the road. What was supposed to be me helping out and learning something has morphed into something entirely different. I'm keeping an eye out for snipers now.

In flatbed, muck boots and good rain gear are important.
A place your going to like is Orschelns or Big R.
Both places you can get actually decent jeans for cheap.
have a good selection on muck boots at good price.
usually in the spring, you can get unlined coveralls on sale.

Ordered my rain gear on line, it is a gortex type light/mid weight set, Safety orange with reflector strips. Was About $60 for pants and jacket. Search amazon for hi-vis rain gear. A light nylon windbreaker shell is also good to have. Depending on the conditions, I put the shell on under the rain jacket. The shell does not breath, so it can get warm. It does its job and stops the wind from getting in. Helps to keep me dry.

For winter, I like to go with layers. ( I know, it's hot right now) I want to be able to move around, but not freeze parts off. I tend to go for llight and thin over bulk. So the nylon shell works here as well. Silk long johns are my favorite. have 4 sets, plus sock liners and balaclavas, these can be a bit spendy, but worth every penney. Wool is also a good choice. Put the two together and you will be good and still move easy.

While I was in the army some guys was wearing knee highs under there socks while on ruck marchs, they said they keep your feet dry in the summer and warm in the winter, you might wanna lok into that also.

Holiday around the corner and I'm finding it's harder to get people home than it is to keep them running. Not that there's a lack of freight heading to N.C., plenty is, it's just difficult to bring everyone in all at once. Pretty well got it done, except for one driver and if it comes to it I'll let him deadhead 225 miles home...but I doubt it'll come to that. Got a good lead to check out first thing in the morning that should carry him within 30 miles of home.

Other than that, things are going ok, the remaining office staff seems to be warming up to me...with one exception, but I believe I made my position pretty clear to her today.

Iced coffee is a treasure. A pure treasure. This will be irritating to you purest but sometimes I will use instant coffee with a little sweeter in a cold water bottle to get me through a pinch. Going to buy a press and do it right. Something is weird. Just trying?
