Well, looks like I have to leave on Saturday. Just booked a whopping 5,000 lb load of luggage for pick up on Monday down in L.A. basin.

These light loads are killing me ;-)

I've been running quite a few light loads back up, really helps to boost my mpg. I checked yesterday and my average is up to 7.58 mpg for the year. Of course, I always haul heavy arse loads south. But that average is pretty good as fuel is a big part of where a guy can increase his margins.

While I'm a big believer in running as efficient as possible. If the difference of good fuel mileage and bad fuel mileage is more than 4 or 5% profit margin you should be concentrating your efforts on finding better freight.

    Let's see-

At 8,000 miles per month and $2.50 per gallon, the difference between 6 MPG and 7 MPG works out to a bit under $500 per month.

If that $500 is only 5% of your profits,it means that your profits are running about $10,000 per month or almost $1.20 per mile, based on the hypothetical 8,000 miles per month.

    I'm impressed.

8k miles a month? That's 96k miles a year. No thank you. The only way I'm running that many miles is if i fell into some golden opportunity where I'm running out 1k miles, reloading and right back paying great in both directions. I truck to live, i don't live to truck.

Edit to add: when i am running otr and not local at home 1.20 is the exact number i shoot for. I dont always hit it, but it's the number i am aiming at.

I like running the way and where I do on the I-5 corridor. I'm a door slammer and marginally lazy, not to mention I like my weekly home time, okay?

I'm certain that if I wanted to chase loads and mile markers all over the country I could make more money than I do running my dry van on the west coast.

If putting a few more dollars in my pocket by running light loads, let me be and don't try and tell me how to run my business, capeesh? ;-)

Ok, now y'all need to zoom in and check this mess out. They guy in the white t-shirt speaks next to no English, the guy in the yellow t-shirt is a Swifty. This is what they came up with. I tried to help but Mr. No English and I couldn't communicate and Mr. Swift you was a certifiable Super Trucker. I was about to call VDoT but got beat to the punch by another flatbedder who couldn't believe what he was seeing.

More on my day later, but I had to throw this up now.
