Some people really need to learn that a lot of times it’s just best to put them in the wind empty.

The megas could have half their trucks parked with no freight available and the other half being repossessed and they'd still cry driver shortage. They can't keep drivers because the grass is always greener somewhere else.

They say there's a shortage because they want 18 years old to come into the industry and starting driving at .20 per mile

Mega carriers keep accepting ######## rates on loads and brokers get away with it more and more. Great way to put o/o's out of business and mega carriers rule the world of trucking

That’s the way it used to work. Only those 18yr olds had been moving trucks around the yard and backing trailers in the shop for a couple of years by then and could climb into anything they had a key for and figure it out. I’ve got a 15yr old works in the yard here that I would put in a truck before most of what the Megas are trying to get it done with. He already backs b-trains into the shop without splitting them. I’m pretty sure he could skin a van onto a dock or park it and leave the fenders on everything. That puts him way ahead of lots of CDL holders already.

My kid was in the truck with me and Mama helped him prep for the test. No school involved. Can’t do it that way anymore

That’s the sad part, that’s how you build truck drivers. At least that’s the way we used to. That seemed to work a lot better than the way they’re doing it now.

It's only going to get worse.

The lawyers have decreed that all classroom instruction needs to be a computer based learning module with multiple guess "check for learning".

HOS used to be a 5 minute discussion as we headed out of town. Now it's an hour on the first day and a "worksheet" every day until they get it right on the first try.

I did the "entry level driver" hazmat class on Sunday. It was little different than just taking the practice tests. Click, click, click, done, you passed. You don't know a dang gum thing about it, but you passed so go forth and put it in the ditch. Or rip someone's hood off.
