I’m glad I’m missing the worst of it being down south. However my vehicle is sitting outside in Fargo. When I checked the antifreeze a few years ago I think it checked at about -25 F. I hope it didn’t freeze

I lost the coolant sensor on the head of the water pump two years ago when it split in -15 here. The computer was being told by voltage that it's now -5 in a 40 degree shop with a 35 degree liquid. It could not determine the right mix for starting and running well. I had to pump her across the throttle range until I found the right amount to inject.

we must get better fuel up here in the far north. I have never put any kind of fuel additive in any of my trucks in over 30 years. I've ran in sub -50C temps and never once had an issue. ponderous...

As long as you stay “up north” and only buy fuel at reputable and busy truck stops there, you’re generally okay to way down below zero F. However if you topped off in Atlanta then headed up into brutal cold and could only get half tank of northern blend fuel, that’s not going to be enough to offset the half tank of southern blend fuel still in the tanks.

One has to be mindful of the general composition of their fuel and try to hold off on topping off until they get well up into the northern tier states to reduce or avoid problems. Any fuel bought south of I-70 has to be regarded as having little if any ability to deal with extreme cold, IMO. At least that’s the mindset I work with and it generally keeps me out of trouble.

Dealing with fleet reefers where you don’t know the fuel history when you pick up another, you have to assume the worse, unless a prior driver somehow lets the next driver know the fuel situation so as not to overdose a reefer tank to dangerous (damaging) levels.

Canada treats the diesel from the refinery, by law....ever notice how in summer the fuel is more yellow or gold in colour.. then as you get into September October November it gets more clear and in coldest it's always clear... the clear stuff runs in the cold. Try the gold stuff in winter you'll have the same problem.

this is not accurate, here in Alberta anyways. the fuel we get in summer is the exact same fuel we get from the pumps in the winter. fuel.png
