Hey guys, and gals.
I have a LOT of questions, so bear with.
I am 18, have a regular class C license. I drive a straight truck (box truck) over 26K lbs with full air brakes out of state. How illegal is this, and what are the consequences? Do they vary by state? I drive through PA, NJ, and NY.
I want to obtain my CDL permit. Im currently studying for the tests. What are the costs to just go to the DMV and take the permit tests in PA? My boss will probably ask one of the current drivers to teach me, take me on loads, etc. This is a route to go, right? Truck Driving school isnt mandatory?
As I asked before, about driving out of state. I KNOW my boss will make me drive out of state, especially with a CDL. How bad would that mess me up if caught out of state with a CDl as opposed without?
Thanks in advance guys, and sorry for all the dumb questions.
Bunch of questions

I can not stress enough how illegal you are driving right now. If you hit someone and severely injure or kill them. Plan on spending a long time in jail. They will not have any sympathy toward you or your employer for ignorance of the law.AfterShock Thanks this. -
Rookietrucker has nailed the regs, but to stress on two LITTLE problems.
The first is 18 driving interstate commercially. This is illegal and it carries a pretty stiff fine. It would not go back to your boss as much as to yourself.
The second, you are operating a vehicle with air brakes and no endorsement. Again a ticket that would hurt.
In addition to the ticket, the truck will probably be impouned. After all, you cannot legally drive it.
The major problem here is that when you continue to do this, each day you are exposing yourself to liability. You MIGHT be able to continue this until you turn 21. However, what if you are caught. Guess what. You now have 1 or 2 violations that will be recorded on your MVR. These will be well known as you apply to a company to run legally. The insurance company will know of these and you might have problems getting a job.
Now, are we telling the truth? Best way is to contact the DOT in the area without advising where and why. Get their opinion.AfterShock Thanks this. -
Oh, shoot. I feel like an ###, to say the least. Any idea of the costs to obtain my CDL in PA? Quitting driving isnt an option as its my only source of income, right now. -
If you are caught then it will be big trouble for you. -
You have been given the best advise possible, if you continue on driving without the proper license and endorsement, I hope you have a angle watching over you.. Your at that age, where you think you no whats best, that's fine, but hope you can deal with the penalties if you get into a wreck, or even stopped and have no CDL...

Man it is hard to believe that any employer would be stupid enough to take on the liability of having someone driving his rig as illegal as you are. Should you, God forbid, have an accident, you are gonna go down, and so is your employer.
Please, do not run the risk of screwing up many years of your life because you can't wait until you are 21 and legally licensed before driving a big rig. It's only 3 years, and while that seems forever at your age, believe me it isn't very long at all. -
I took what you all said into consideration. I guess I was wrong about the weight, its right under 26K. It does have full air, but the cop, that wrote a citation for missing a weigh station, didnt seem to mind. That, or he missed the large yellow button protruding from the dash?

No truck driving school is not mandatory.
It is very possible you can get a CDL for the state you live in. May not be possible.

But hate to tell you but you must be over 21 to drive a vehicle over 10,000lbs. GVWR interstate . I was following a 20 year old driver in a Ford Super Duty that got stopped by KY DVE . The truck had Ohio registration and 11,000 GVWR . I got the driver out of a ticket because we had just left a job in KY and the driver had a KY driver's license . I convinced the officer the driver was going to take the truck home .
