I have one of those German built diesel burning bunk warmers that works really great, unless it's really cold outside. Then, it puts out a white smoke, burbs a lot, then shuts itself down. I've insulated the tiny fuel line, but that hasn't really helped.
bunk warmer only works when it's NOT cold outside

how do you know it's german built.
i have an espar system. it's made my somebody that actually builds them for rv's. in america.
i would say either your burner isn't working. or your fan is worn out. which would probably be the better bet.
what you describe could be worn bearings in the fan. causing the fan to work harder and overheat to the point it shuts down. -
Needs to be pulled apart, new screen and clean the orifice above the screen.

what heater? Webasto, Eber?
first of all I advice you to install small tank for bunk heater. when diesel is cold it is thick and it is hard to lift it up from fuel tank. I used aluminium can to do it.
the other bad thing I sugest is that you have carbone deposits on evaporator and heater cant start when it fuel is thick so may be it is time to change evaporator and clean heater inside.
If you wanna keep heater tide inside use kerosine, jet fuel in mixture with diesel fuel when it is really cold, especially below zero. that's why I use small tank for heater)dannythetrucker Thanks this. -
I have had my espar for 5 years and i just had to replace my ignitor and screen . I have had to take it apart and clean out the carbon build up once from the biodiesel . It was so plugged up that it could not fire up any longer and it would just smoke and gurgle . they are real simple to work on and you can get parts at thermo king or order them online .

not so simple. There are gaskets recomended to replace every time you take it apart. if gasket is bad you may get exaust smell in sleeper. so you are lucky to keep old gasketsdannythetrucker Thanks this.

I would assume that you would have enough sense to replace the gaskets when you take it apart but you are right you will need gaskets to take it aprt and reassemble it . It is not a hard job by any means if you know how to read a Manuel you can fix anything on the espar heater . I don't know about the other brand though . You can get all the Manuel's online for the espar products also .

That's one trick on the espars, don't use the stock combustion gasket. It can crack after a few weeks even. Use high temperature silicon.
I've had mine for 9 years and I've never had to replace either the glow tip or the combustion chamber. It shouldn't cost more than $15 in parts to rebuild one.
Before you rebuild it, get a jug of kerosene and take the hose off the fuel tank and run it into the jug. Let it burn that at full boogie for an hour or two, it will clean the carbon right out.
