Buying A Schneider Glider

I really hate to be harsh but, if you don't know what to check you are in no way ready to by a truck.

 

Wow, didn't know they even ran gliders. Learn something every day.

 

Are you planning to put Ontario plates on it? Have you figured out how to pass the e-test required to get plated? You will be buying a 2012 truck that does not meet 2012 emissions. Ontario says if your truck is a 2012 it has to meet 2012 standards. Ask a mechanic if he will safety it. Part of the new requirements to get a safety certificate is all the emissions systems have to be on the truck. I am not sure if that means it must have all the components a 2012 has or if it means it is good because technically it was put together that way. Lots of questions around gliders in Ontario. There are some companies running them, I have no idea how they skirt around the rules to run them.

I run a glider with a series 60, as far as inexpensive and reliable you can't beat it. Mileage is decent, and by decent for me I pull an RGN, so 3.9 to mid 5's keeping in mind I run around 100-110000 gross most every load. The glider is a very smart way to go and just about any diesel shop in the country will work on it for you if your not a backyard mechanic. I run full synthetic engine oil and just had a shop run the overhead for me since mine is still under warranty- Inoticed a night and day difference in the way it runs. So if you want to check things out, first and foremost, maintenance records. If you can get ahold of them do so. Look at the engine label, it will say somewhere on the valve cover label, and mine as an example 6067BK60. So I've been told the BK prefix is the premium build. If you find a rig with that generation of motor you couldn't go wrong. I personally would also look for atleast a 13 spd. Pop the hood, check out the quality of the install, routing of hoses ect. I've had to move a couple that we're going to rub on something and repair another that I didn't catch that did rub through. Not a hard fix, just something else to do. Detroits will leak. Period. But look around and make sure it's not something obvious that could be tightened up or a gasket replaced...and you know the usual, pull the dipstick. Check the coolant. Look at the belts. Look for leaks around the turbo and exhaust manifold. That should get you started, take a look at some of the new gliders too, I'm not sure your financial situation but I bought mine brand new, only required 6k down... And I have a full 3 year 300000 mile warranty. Good luck driver.

Yeap snider been doin the glider thing for yrs,they did it to cut back on junk emmission engines..

A glider is the only way to go nowa days unless you need to drive in california..


HAIDER 99.....Atleast go drive for 5-10 yrs and learn before you shell out 20-40 thou on a truck..

 

I had one for a while, pulled hills pretty decently and got decent mileage. Keep in mind that they are pretty much stripped down models. Also they can be skimpy on maintenance, for example I needed a clutch and the company would not allow the mechanics to put in a new one...presumably because they were getting ready to sell it.

Solid engine though if you can get the truck cheap enough and be willing to put a few bucks in it.
