Are there any legal issues if you buy like one of those flat nosed cabovers from the early 80's and try to haul freight with it?

I mean, mechanical issues aside, are they legal to pull 80,000 lb?

Yes they can pull 80K. They bounce alot, many are spring ride in front if not all around.

Emissions laws apply to older trucks? I was hoping it would be like with private automobiles where older vehicles were exempt from them.

I see a few, the head man at the shop has a gold COE Freightliner with round headlights and a 3406 A engine, I believe, he and his brother drive it to pull a bullrack.

I see a fair number on the road in the midwest, all makes and sizes of sleeper. Many are hauling grain locally, and some are going farther pulling whatever can be pulled.

nothing wrong with an old truck. legal eveywhere including cali if you can afford the kit which personally cali is not a state...lol as for anything else i would just watch the fuel injection pump if its a cat. cost 7 grand new and when my buddies b model when the only used pumps we found where for the old v 8 cats....and the front spring ciomment trucks have have front leaf springs for a while and still do only those cheese fall apart crappy newer trucks had stock air ride front axles which by the way is under review for safety standards...i hope they do away with them..an air spring in the leaf pack is on thing an air bad by itsekf its stupid

I've been told they won't be legal of OTR trucks (interstate) by end of 2014 because you won't be able to hook up an EOBR to them. You will need an electronic controlled engine for an EOBR. EOBR are currently mandated to Jan of 2015, though that will probably change before then.
