Place I retired from just switched away from Penske over problems with repairs but they should come with maintenance records.
So would a used Ryder truck.
It might not be suitable to fleet work but still could make a farm truck; especially if mechanically inclined.
Some farms have a lot of diesel knowhow.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

For one that’s going to sit around a lot ,
I would get one that’s old enough to not have any emission garbage on it .
we have a couple of skid steers and mini excavators. Two old ones and two new ones
wanna guess which ones are always in the shop ?
and which ones have never ever not cranked ?
that’s right .
The old ones that don’t have the emission crap , are very reliable .
Th e new ones are in the shop all the time .Rideandrepair and AModelCat Thank this. -

I bought my Trailer directly from Penske. It was a fair deal. Personally I disagree with buying Penske or Ryder Trucks. They’re usually over priced if bought direct. Day Cabs are notoriously beat up, driven harsh, and despite claims ( especially by Ryder) not always maintained very well. Just ask any Company Driver that drives a Ryder Lease Truck. Also being a Lease or Rental, they’ve had dozens of Drivers. A lot of Dealers buy from auctions. You get the same equipment at a higher price. They buy a dozen or more, fix any problems. Most are minor, occasionally some are major. They take the cost and divide it across the lot. Costing them an average per vehicle. Auctions are good, but there’s always the chance of getting the one with major problems. Then it becomes a loser. I’d definitely buy at auction. If it was a good deal. Often everyone comes to buy. The best equipment gets bid high. I’d rather take a chance on an actual Trucking Company’s equipment. Ryder does do some Trucking of their own, even have their own sale lots. They’re packed full now. Never saw a good deal there myself. Met many O/O’s who happily overpaid for plain Jane Trucks. Simply because they were convinced that Ryder maintained them well. IMO they weren’t very knowledgeable, and were trying to buy peace of mind.

Many fleets sell their trucks at auction simply because they want to get as much money as possible for each one, or they don't want the hassle of selling the trucks themselves.
