Is DOFT considered a good load board ?? These are the rates I've been following. I have a friend that has access to DAT and will work with me. DAT is expensive so I would think it is much better ???

I don't know what DOFT is. The majority of people here and everywhere who run OTR are on DAT. It's my main squeeze and I use Truckstop some. DAT's rates just went up I think, or at least mine did. I've been meaning to call them.

For a couple years I was paying $35/month for DAT. That's a tiny cost in this business. $235 would still be a minor cost!

Doft is $19.99. I'm guessing DAT has better paying loads (probably by a little) but the interface is pretty cool. It even offers a 1 step click to review backhauls. Have you ever heard anyone that signed on with Schneider or similar ?? I'm sure you would lose a ton of flexibility, which I need.

You can sign up as a carrier with most of the big brokerages like Schneider, JBHunt, Landstar and so many more and use their free load boards. There are decent loads that pay well there. Lots of us here use them.

So I don't have to lease on with landstar to use their board ?? I was thinking I had to sign on (lease on) with one of them.

Na, you can just register as a carrier. Their board isn't very good though. I get more good Landstar loads off DAT than I ever have from their board. But, all Landstar agents are not created equal. In fact, most are crooks. If they speak very broken English most (not all but most) are just agents double brokering crap loads. Beware of those.

    Tuckster Thanks this.

You could lease on to a carrier and work month on month off. On the months you take off tell em to suspend insurance. But it has to be a full month off afaik

My plans are going to be more like week on week off ... don't think anybody will be interested in me. That's why I'm thinking renewing my authority and going it on my own is probably my only choice. Awaiting insurance quotes now. By far the biggest fix expense which I will have weather driving 60,000/year or 100,000/year.

If you just want to part-time why not go somewhere like Landstar or one of those types of outfits that lease on owner ops? This way you don't have to deal with all the hassles of owning the MC or paying crazy insurance rates..

On flip side if you live out west somewhere the insurance rates might not be that bad for your own MC.
