I'm looking at picking up a used box truck from Oklahoma. I live in MI. MDOT regulations state that I have 3 days to drive the vehicle home. Here is a quote from their website.

"You do not need a license plate to drive a newly purchased vehicle directly home within Michigan within three days of purchase. Carry the assigned title with you. Never use a plate from another vehicle as a substitute."

As you can see, it applies to vehicles bought within MI. The situation gets further complicated as I'm sure the truck I buy will have been registered as a commercial vehicle before I bought it. I plan on registering it as NON-commercial. Not an issue, I've done it before when I bought an old utility truck, they just register it based on weight using a scale slip. But, since it was a CMV will that pose a problem? I don't really want to fly to OK, rent a car, look at the truck, pay for it, fly back to MI, transfer title, get plates, fly back, hire taxi to take me to it, then drive it home. If it all works out, we were gonna detour on our way to visit my daughter in TX and if it was a good deal, drive it home with my wife following behind in our car. I just need to find out who to talk to for "clearance" so to speak. I know there's some DOT officers that could chime in on here. hoping one of you can offer advice.

How do I get it home?

I think this has been brought up before. Are you going to buy off of a dealer? If so you would get a 30 day tag and be able to get it home that way but you have to have insurance on it. If you are buying from an individual you should be able to go to DMV and get a 10 permit after you show proof of insurance of course. I am not positive but I think this what was discussed.

Do you recall which DMV it was? State of purchase or state of residence? I tried searching but it must be buried in a topic. Couldn't come up with the proper search term to find it. Gonna give it another shot in the morning.

I think it was the state of purchase. Just call your local DMV and they should be able to answer.

In the search bar type in "What do I need to drive truck off lot" and you can read through that and maybe that will help you. Hope you get the answer.

Lug-I bought a dump, in your state 3 yrs. ago in Buckley from Mid-West Tractor Co. All I needed was a "In Transit Sticker" and drove home to Mass. Had no plates, only sticker on right window. Cost was 120.00 for sticker. Mike

anytime i buy something i just call the insurance company get a temp insurance card and drive it home, never been hassled. as far as i know its perfectly legal. just make sure that you have supporting documentation that you just bought the vehicle. if you get it from a dealer you can probably get them to give you a temp registration sticker good for 30 days.

Find out if OK department of motor vehicles issues temporary plates. Then all you need is an insurance card then go to the local (OK) DMV there and get a temp tag. You do NOT need ANY other permits, licenses, stickers to drive it home.

I've personally purchased two trucks in Texas.. I live in Louisiana. All I've done is notified insurance of my purchase (OOIDA).. they issued a temporary policy (I believe it was for 7 days...can't remember) and I drove the truck home... One dealer did place a 'IN TRANSIT' sticker in the window and the other placed one of their paper tags in the window... the main thing is that If I would have gotten stopped I had a copy of the Bill of sale and the insurance card... I'm also a used auto dealer and do this while (IN TRANSIT tag) transporting vehicles that I've purchased.

Thanks for the input so far. Called SOS and she knew less than I did. I have to dig up my old State Police "help line" number I've got from some Q&A sessions last year. They were always pretty knowledgable.
