Buying a used Penske truck, are they well maintained?

Penske intends to service their trucks well but I know of a regional carrier that ran a Penske truck over 4,000 miles a week and it went 8 weeks without seeing a Penske shop .

 

Yellow one? I saw Columbias in Russia twice

And it's better than orange , blue or red .

 

The local Penski shop near our shop services about 50 units. They actually keep them up pretty good and stay on top of maintenance. Most units now are coming with 800,000 km warranties and Penski must uphold good maintenance records to comply and be eligible for the warranty, (Cummins extended).

 

After renting from Penske 3 times in the last 2 years I would never consider buying a truck from them. All 3 times the trucks had major problems with the EGR valves and associated parts. The trucks were gutless and got horrible fuel mileage. Also many of the trucks don't see their shops to often and oil drain intervals are stretched past manufacturer recomendations with out bypass oil filters. They service the trucks just like a large fleet does...don't fix it unless it breaks or is required for DOT compliance.

 

I guess it all depends on how that particular shop is managed. Like anything else, do you due diligence!
