As a guy who used to fix PC's for a living, I think using such software is a bad idea. Those USB ports are setup to provide limited amps for a reason. Amps make heat. If you overdrive and thus overheat the USB ports, they will fail. They won't fail today. They won't fail tomorrow. But they WILL fail if you overdrive them long enough.

And when they fail, they won't hard fail i.e. stop working completely. They'll still work, but they won't work right. Which means the problems that result will look to a tech like they are being caused by other things. So the tech will spend a lot of time (and your money) applying fixes that won't work before they finally figure out that you trashed your USB chip by using software to overdrive the amperage.

There are lots of other ipad charging options available which are cheap and reliable. The solution you're using now could become very expensive for you later.

IMO, an ipad cannot replace a laptop. I can do a lot more on a pc than I can a ipad.

I've just found a dual boot tablet, Windows 7/Android. My laptop is showing some signs that I should start looking, and I stumbled on it made by Viewsonic. Now to find a brick and mortar that has it on display. Apps plus a real computing OS spells win to me if the execution is decent.

Well, lets have a look at the facts.

We have Asus a company that manufacturers Mother Boards for a living. A multi million dollar company that designed, wrote and implemented the software. They are saying its OK for any computer to use this software.

    Or

We have some random guy on the internet saying its probably not ok to use the software.

Decisions, decisions. Hmmmmmm I think ill stick with my decision to use the Asus software.

Wow dude. If you don't want to listen, fine don't listen. But you don't have to get insulting about it. I'm only someone who made a ton of money of guys like you fixing mistakes like this caused by their ignorance but what do I know?

jgremlin I do not think Kansas was meant to be insulting. But, the point he is driving at is that Asus builds motherboards and I think this software driven program would have been tested on USB ports and their associated hardware. Asus has been in business for quite a while and I am sure they have engineers that have done some serious testing on this program.

I would be leary of an App that suddenly appeared, but this is not the case.

Kansas has no idea who you are or your qualifications. But, to agree with Kansas, Asus has a little more "horse power" in dealing with motherboards.

Now, as you state, you are a computer tech, how many motherboards were damaged by this Asus program? If there was damage and it was Asus's program would you not have contacted Asus to alert them?

    Just saying.

I'm quite sure Asus has tested the software on Asus motherboards. I'm also pretty sure they didn't test it on anyone elses hardware. And I'm pretty sure they will tell you tough luck if you experience a hardware failure as a result of using their software on hardware they didn't make.

The OP can do whatever he wants. I know what I saw as a tech and I know what I charged to fix it. If he doesn't want to believe me, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. It his money to blow however he wants.

What you saw, can you say for 100% that it was caused by a software program that increases power to the USB port? And was it caused by this program?

Hardware does not differ much between motherboard manufactures. I am sure a lot of the chips are the same between companies.

I run over 9 USB connections and more on my laptop. This is driving TND's that pull power, plus I run my power settings on full. I run the laptop 24/7 and it has been running great since 2007. Main HD crashed, but that is the only issue.

USB ports have standards and I am sure that Asus followed these standards in making this program.

If you look on the Main intro - they say "All Motherboards and PC's". So, in this statement they are saying they have tested on other motherboards.

I would take it that since they are saying 50% faster they are increasing the mA output. Not Amps. This is the same as taking a USB power hub and increasing the lower mA of the USB port and to about 500mA.

Since the newer laptops have basically taken the USB output and decreased it or load balanced it across all USB ports, this program is redirecting output power (mA) to one port or basically increasing the mA output.and prepare for even more enjoyment!
