Yes you would most likely need permits but those trailers are also much heavier. The flat stretches we ran were around 15k. You will not get a stretch with spread axles either.

Many states you can overhang off the rear of a 53' without permits and in some you would need a permit with a 48' but can go without a permit with a 53'.
If I had only one trailer it would be an all aluminum 53'. Mac or Reitnauer is my preference.

You would be so heavy that you would need a customer with some dedicated freight in most cases to make that work. Way to heavy to be very versatile. My brother has 7-8 stretch flats but they came after several years and still only use them for a handful of customers. They stay parked a lot but when they do go you know they are getting paid. Still looking at getting a couple more.

Pro of buying a new trailer.....You can spec it the way you want it! I bought a new Doonan flatbed earlier this year. The trailer is spec'd exactly how I wanted it for the kind of freight I haul.
Con......You can buy a trailer cheaper and save paying the Federal Excise Tax! When you find the deal you want they you can always add different items to the trailer so it is spec'd more to your liking.
